Windows 10: What You’ll Lose When You Upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10

I even went so far on my 8.1 machine and imaged not only my OS drive(a SSD), I also image my 2nd internal(2 TB HDD) that has 2 partitions, 1st backups(File History & Various Macrium System Images), 2nd my Libraries. Yes I imaged my images*chuckle. That way if I have any problems, I have a complete "System" image not just C: drive.

It took 7 hours, where as just my SSD only takes 4 minutes.(I can imagine how long reimaging would take, I really hope I don't need it). I just keep this image about a year and if all is well, I can create one for 10.

 

I am confused, so if you back up your w7 system, take the W10 upgrade by using your W7 license, then change your mind, and reinstall W7, that MS will change the status of your license to what it was before you did the upgrade/clean install?

I am under the assumption that you "forfeit" your present license for a new W10 one??

Thats like saying all you lose is an archaic gun when being forced to switch from a M14 to a M16A1 during vietnam war.
You might say... WOW the M16 looks so sexy... wow it has a glow in the dark sight system... wooow a carrying handle..
What good is that stuff for when the M16 is more prone to jams and ejection failure than the M14.
I'm not saying that Windows 10 is less stable or will have more errors in RTM version than Win 7 or 8
But! The features that are advertised are not really improvements that affect the main characteristics of an operating system.

Keyword of the day for you: "reliability"

 

I've installed Windows 10 on a secondary 2009 Core 2 Duo ASUS Laptop.. It runs smooth as butter with only minor start menu glitches. Please do not mention Windows 7 with Windows 10. It's not even close to similar! Windows 8 already took down 7 in performance, stability and reliability and 10 is pushing it even further, along with a bunch of new features.

If you read enough forums, you'll find people claiming the exact opposite.

I didn't notice any difference between W7 & W8 in terms of stability and reliability,
I don't have the tools (or inclination) so I can't prove it one way or the other.

A quick question - if I upgrade by installing 10 over 7, will I lose files etc that are currently on my desktop, and in my downloads and documents libraries?.

Documents and data should be fine for an upgrade, nothing should touch them

If you have the Get Win 10 app installed (windows logo in bottom right) it should tell you if anything is incompatible with Win 10, even mentions data and files now

Best to be safe though and backup

 

On and upgrade nope. On a clean install yes. So for the first time all your files(and compatible programs and program data too) will still be there.

On another issue though, while I was at work my Wife decided to use the Upgrade option, and had installed Windows 10, and the latest version through Windows Update. She has another SATA HDD (local disk E) on which she has backed up her odds and ends. That HDD shows up in Settings, storage, but it clicking on it it says that it's not accessible, and just says NTFS.

Do I suggest trying to get the latest drivers for her motherboard etc?. Speccy (by Piriform) already detects the other HDD though.
