New i9-7900X build with Corsair Dominators set to 3333. Causes some wonky fan activity, though. Fans will just spin up of their own accord. CPU temps hover around 27-31. Doesn't happen when memory is at stock.

XMP Profile is 3333. Looking at HWMonitor pro and CPU-Z, I get all kinds of weird readings. NB speed fluctuations, a single processor thread jumping to 65C causing the fans to spin up. I expect that to happen when I fire up a game, not at idle, though. The NB speed fluctuates at 2133 too, just no CPU shenanigans. So the fans act normally.

In my limited research, others are having similar issues and most are attributing it to the new intel 'mesh' architecture. Supposedly under the old architecture it would take a quarter of a second or so for a core to spin up to full speed. Under the mesh architecture - it's 8 milliseconds. So that allows all these new processors to run differently - keeping core and bus speeds down until absolutely needed. And that is fine - This system is much quieter that the 4790K it replaced and it seems to have no trouble running any of my stuff (games, dev, VMs). VMs are extremely fast on a 960 PRO, btw.

I'm used to sorting out these things quickly - but I guess with this one I'm going to use a time tested tactic - lurk around here until enough of these systems show up. Someone usually sorts it after a time. If I sort it, of course I will be posting it up here. So, I will continue to research it - I'd really like to run my memory at the speed I paid for.

    Hi,
Very nice mine is 3200 trident z there's nothing wrong running at the rated speed although I usually run at the rated compatible speed for the board and cpu which is 2666 instead of the default clock of 2133.
We have the same mother board and cpu *Smile

These are two screen grabs from CPU-Z made about a minute apart. My PC runs perfectly, though, with absolutely no stutters and hiccups. Normal? Do you get the same readings? Or I should say the same fluctuations?

  10. Hi,
    Not that large :/
Mine pretty much sticks at 1333. which is x2 = 2666...
the fluctuation is on the .3 to .5 range.

Are you using a performance power plan ?
Like I said earlier I dialed in my 2666 in bios not the default 2133 which you're probably using.

Yeah, I'm using the 2133 default. I have changed the power plans but the fluctuations still happen. I'm running balanced now.

  12. Hi,
Go manual and switch from auto in bios and go down to dram frequency and scroll the list for 2666.
Go down more and switch dram voltage to 1.20v

High performance power plan will do better.

What speed and voltage are you currently on for your ram sticks?

  14. Hi,
For just general browsing as what is in the quote you replied too
    2666 @ 1.20v c16 default timings 16-18-18-38-T2

Even if I were set manually at 3200 with 1.35v with the same timings it pretty much sticks at 1600. with only .2-.3-.4 fluctuating.

If I run 2166, 2400, or 2600, I see wild swings in the CPU-Z NB and DRAM freq measurement. So I backed down to 2166 with 15-15-15-36-1T. I think I'm going to wait for some new versions of CPU-Z to see if things change. But the fact of the matter is: my computer runs with no issues. Temps at idle run between 26 and 28 while core speeds run around 3.1 to 3.3 GHz on all 10 cores. I've had no problem with any program, game, or VM to make me wonder about it's operation.
    Ignorance is bliss. *Wink
