when I type in the PIN i virtual smart card, the box says "There was an error while validating your PIN. Error Code: 0x8010001F." In the event log I see event 623.i have tried to change pin but not worked

Virtual Smart Card Error after Machine Resumes From Hibernate

I have a UWP application that signs some data using a certificate stored on a virtual smart card on the TPM. Whenever the machine resumes from hibernate, the virtual smart card seems to get in a bad state: when I type in the PIN, the box says "There was an error while validating your PIN. Error Code: 0x8010001F." In the event log I see event 623.

The card in Smart Card Reader 'Microsoft Virtual Smart Card 0' has been reset because an application held an exclusive transaction on the card for 5 seconds without activity. If this error persists, the application may not be functioning correctly. Process ID: 13764

On another machine, this application has worked for years without any issues. The problem used to occur much more frequently, but after some firmware updates, it now basically only occurs after hibernate. This lead me to believe it was a Dell firmware issue, but Dell believes it may be a Microsoft issue.

I also confirmed that the problem is not limited to the UWP application. If I run certutil -scinfo after resuming from hibernate, I also get the same error message when I type in my PIN. certutil decodes the HRESULT to "An unexpected card error has occurred. 0x8010001f (-2146435041 SCARD_E_UNEXPECTED)"

 

Disable PIN caching for Virtual Smart Cards

We want to store digital certificates for PDF signing in virtual smart cards. Due to regulatory reasons (FDA, we are developing medical devices), I have to assure that the PIN protecting the certificate has to be (re-)entered for each document to be signed.
The default behavior seems to be that the PIN has only to be entered for the first document and is then cached. Is there any possibility to configure the PIN policy of a virtual smart card to "always prompt". As far as I know, this can be done for conventional
smart cards and the windows certificate store.
