    When rebooting or restarting my PC, I am experiencing a Microsoft Security Essentials hang...


    When I reboot or restart my PC, the PC goes thru the boot process of loading all start up programs but when it gets to Microsoft Security Essentials it gets hung up for about 15-20 seconds. After that time of 15 seconds the remaining start up programs finish loading. This is slowing down the entire restart/reboot of the PC. Should I try uninstalling Microsoft Security Essentials then reinstalling the program? Please advise.

  3. Windows 10 Windows Defender versus Microsoft Security Essentials

    Hi Bryan,

    Microsoft Security Essentials was upgraded to Windows defender and it was a default security software from Windows 8. You cannot have both as they are one.

    Since you get this annoying popup at the startup i suggest you to disable any Microsoft Security Essentials entries in Startup tab.

    • Open the Task manager. by pressing Press CTRL+Shift+ESC.
    • click on Startup tab
    • Right click on Microsoft Security Essentials entry and click on Disable.

    Restart the computer and check if that helps.

    How long have you been using MSE?



    Have you scanned for malware? List
    of Malware Removal Tools




    Assuming this is a recent install of MSE and your computer is not infected see the following:



    Be sure you have removed all other security software from the PC.



    Sometimes remnants of prior security software will cause issues with your current antivirus program. A possible reason
    for this problem is that you have conflicting security software still installed fully or partially on the PC.



    Prior Security Software? McAfee, Norton, Spybot, Trend Micro? What about a trial version of an antivirus program that was pre-installed when the computer was purchased? If you reformatted/reinstalled the operating system
    did you also reinstall a trial version of a security program? Did you remove such programs to include using the appropriate removal tool (McAfee Removal Tool, Norton Removal Tool, etc) and then reboot the computer? List

    If the above suggestions do not help or are not applicable to your situation, you may need
    to uninstall/reinstall MSE.

    You should be able to remove MSE from Control Panel. Any problems uninstalling see: Uninstalling
    Microsoft Security Essentials


    Recommend you restart the computer to ensure the uninstall is complete.

    You can download a new MSE Installation File from http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-all-versions



    If you cannot resolve your issue please post back in this thread with further information.
