Win 10 1511 10586

Been on Win 10 for about 6 weeks upgraded from Win 7. Win Update listed Above update avail. Loaded it but it failed at restart. Could not then restart PC. Used repair disk to boot and system restore back to orig Win 10 ver. Got error 0x80000fff problem
during restore which appears to be a vista / win 7 restore issue. Fix will not run on Win 10. Any suggestions

WSL2 will be generally available in Windows 10 version 2004

WSL2 will soon be officially available as part of Windows 10, version 2004! As we get ready for general availability, we want to share one additional change: updating how the Linux kernel inside of WSL2 is installed and serviced on your machine. We’ve heard lots of community feedback that the install experience could be streamlined, and we’re taking the first step towards this by improving the servicing model of the Linux kernel. We’ve removed the Linux kernel from the Windows OS image and instead will be delivering it to your machine via Windows Update, the same way that 3rd party drivers (like graphics, or touchpad drivers) are installed and updated on your machine today. This change will give you more agility and flexibility over Linux kernel updates in WSL2. Read on to learn more about how you’ll see this in the user experience.

How will I notice this change?

Our end goal is for this change to be seamless, where your Linux kernel is kept up to date without you needing to think about it. By default this will be handled entirely by Windows, just like regular updates on your machine. Inside of the initial release of Windows 10, version 2004, and in the latest Windows Insiders slow ring preview build you will temporarily need to manually install the Linux kernel, and will receive an update in a few months that will add automatic install and servicing capabilities. We made this change now and will have a patch later to ensure that all users in the initial general release of WSL2 will be serviced via this dynamic model, and no one will be left in a middle state using the prior system.

Automatic install and updates

If you’ve ever gone to your Windows settings, and clicked ‘Check for Updates’ you might have seen some other items being updated like Windows Defender malware definitions, or a new touchpad driver, etc. The Linux kernel in WSL2 will now be serviced in this same method, which means you’ll get the latest kernel version independently of consuming an update to your Windows image. You can manually check for new kernel updates by clicking the ‘Check for Updates’ button, or you can let Windows keep you up to date just like normal.

If you’re installing WSL for the first time, we’ll check for updates and install the Linux kernel for you during the WSL install process.

Temporary experience of manually installing the Linux kernel in Windows 10, version 2004 and Windows Insiders slow ring

After updating to Windows 10 build 19041.153, when you run any of the following commands:

wsl (If a WSL2 distro is your default distro)

wsl --set-version <Distro> 2, – wsl --set-default-version 2

wsl --import and wsl --export targeting WSL2

You’ll see a one-time message instructing you to update your kernel. It will instruct you to go to the link: Updating the WSL 2 Linux kernel | Microsoft Docs.

Once there, follow the instructions to download the MSI package, run it to install your Linux kernel, and you’ll be finished and ready to use WSL2. When automatic install and update of the Linux kernel is added you’ll start getting automatic updates to your kernel right away.

Windows 10 SDK for Windows 10 version 2004 build 19041 now available

The Windows 10 SDK for Windows 10, version 2004 is now available with a go-live license. Build 19041, also known as the Windows 10 May 2020 Update, is now in the Release Preview Windows Insider ring.

New APIs and Features for developers

Every Windows 10 update is loaded with new APIs, but don’t worry, Windows Dev Center has a full list of what is new for developers.
In addition to the new APIs, check out these updates to the app model, MSIX and WSL.

Windows Subsystem for Linux: The Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 is the latest and greatest version of WSL. It has significantly faster file IO performance (up to 20x faster) with full system call compatibility, meaning you can run more of the Linux apps you love (like Docker).

Hosted App Model: Applications can now declare themselves as a host for other applications via the new HostRuntime extension. These hosted apps look and behave like independent apps and can have deep Windows integration, even though they get their main executable from the host app. This technology powers PWAs on Microsoft Edge. Sparse Signed Packages: Applications can now include a signed MSIX package in their existing installers and have their installers register it. This allows applications to keep their existing installers but still assign themselves identities. An identity makes the app known to Windows and allows for a more deeply integrated experience by enabling the app to call Windows APIs that require identities such as Tiles, Toasts, Notifications and BackgroundTasks. Update your dev environment in two simple steps today

The first step in updating your dev environment is to update your system to the Windows 10, version 2004 (by using the Release Preview Ring). The Insider team has a great blog post that will walk you through how to get on the Release Preview Ring.

Then, go into Visual Studio 2017 or 2019 and grab the new SDK, and you’ll be good to go. Once version 2004 goes to general availability in May, the SDK will become the default SDK inside Visual Studio.

Today, with Windows Insider Release Preview for Windows 10, version 2004 Update:

Run the installer or go to Download Visual Studio 2019 for Windows & Mac and download it.

Go to “Individual Components.”

Go to “SDKs, libraries, and frameworks” section.

Check “Windows 10 SDK (10.0.19041).”

Click “Install.”

When the Windows 10, version 2004 goes to general availability:

Run the Visual Studio installer, or go to Download Visual Studio 2019 for Windows & Mac and download it.

Select “Universal Windows Platform development” under Workloads — Windows 10 SDK (10.0.19041) will be included by default.

Click “Install.”

Which workload should I choose?

Do you want tools for C++ desktop or game development for UWP? Be sure one of these two are selected:

C++ Universal Windows Platform tools in the UWP Workload section

Desktop development with C++ Workload and the Windows SDK 10 (10.0.19041)

If you want the Universal Windows Platform tools, Select the Universal Windows Platform tools workload.

Once your systems are updated and recompiled and your app is tested, submit your app to Dev Center.
