When Windows 10 updates itself, does it go into hibernation when done?

I have my PC set to turn off the monitor in 10 minutes and sleep in 20. But I HATE this automatic updating that Windows 10 is doing, because it seems to go into hibernation when it's done, and with this PC I've always had an impossible time getting it out of that state. I literally have to shut the power off at the UPS, which is dangerous when the OS has been updating. ( haven't been able to bring it out of hibernation with any keys. This is an Asus Essentio, by the way. )

I hate the fact that it updates without permission too, in fact, you may have seen my other threads here, that I'm so disgusted with Windows 10 that I'm probably going to have to buy a refurbed PC now, just so I can transfer everything to a Win 8.1 OS and get back to not having all these hassles and lack of functionality that this atrocious OS has brought me, without risking my part time home business any further, which is on this PC. *Mad

Anyway, if these updates are throwing it into hibernation before they're completed, is there a way that I can assign something like the Escape key for bringing it out safely?

    :)

  2. hibernating windows 10

My computer came with this version of Windows 10 on it, that does not have the hibernate option anywhere at all.

When is Microsoft going to fix this, so that the newest versions of Windows 10 go back to having hibernate as an option again?

  3. Wakeup from Hibernation

I have a laptop with Windows 10. If I hibernate it, it wakes up by itself when I don't expect it. I've inspected the scheduler, but failed to detect where or how it is happening. Does anyone have any ideas as to where to look?

None of my Windows 10 devices do that.

I'm not sure what to suggest. I have hibernation turned off in my Power settings, but I'm not convinced that has anything to do with your problem. If there is some setting that sends the PC into hibernation after an update rather than doing a restart (required after some updates), I am unaware of it.

Are you quite sure that it's going into hibernation? I haven't used it in years, but I recall that it wrote an image of what was in RAM to the hard disk. The PC then powered down completely. When it was started up again, the contents of RAM were restored from the HD. The main problem with that was that if you have a lot of RAM, it could take quite a long time.

No, I can tell because I monitor the wattage meter on my UPS all the time. It draws about 130 watts when the PC first starts. When the monitor turns off, it draws about 85 watts. When it goes completely into sleep, it draws 3-6 watts. THEN I can wake it up from sleep with the power key on top of the PC.

But after these dreaded automatic updates, I come in here and it has a black screen and is drawing about 85 watts and I cant get it to do anything. The power key won't work to bring it out again. The same behavior as when it hibernates, which is why I've never liked hibernate. So I shut the power off this morning, after that, and turned it on again, and it came up and said not to turn it off, that it was finishing updates.

I just HATE this OS and wish I'd kept Win 7 on this PC!

At least one of us is confused.

When a PC goes into hibernation, its active state is copied to the HD. Then the PC shuts off. Really off; no flashing power indicator like for Sleep mode. When the PC is started up again, the previous state is restored from the HD. Can take quite a while if you have gigabytes of RAM.

I believe that what you are seeing has nothing to do with hibernation.

Did the updates you mention ever complete? (I suppose not, or you wouldn't be posting here.)

At a guess, your graphics drivers were hosed by the update, and you're losing signal to the monitor. (Looks just the same as if the monitor was shut down by Windows, with the PC still on.)

I'm not sure about Win 10 Home, but on Pro it is possible to turn off driver updates in Windows Update. (Other updates are still automatic.)

Maybe you should go back to 7, if you can. (I disliked 8 and 8.1 because of the poor integration of the desktop and the interface originally known as Metro.) You could avoid all updates in 7. That might leave you open to malware, though. And, you'd have to put on 7 as a clean install, and re-install all software that you need.

And, if you wish to assure that you get little or no help in this forum, keep posting how much you hate 10. We're not all fans here, but ranting is unattractive.

After every update, I've had a black screen and no response, while the PC draws about 85 watts. The graphics drivers are working when it's on. But after updates I've had to turn power off at the UPS and restart, to get it back on again, then it says it's completing updates - please wait, and eventually comes back up. Oh if only I COULD still go back to 7, without losing everything. ( my entire computing life is on here - it would be enormous work to restore it, reinstall all programs, etc. ) Yeah, ok on the ranting. Understand.

This is a decent PC, though I got it as refurbed, 6 years ago. Asus Essentio 2.5 GHz with 8GB ram and a 1TB 7200 RPM HD. I'd just need another refurbed PC to move everything to, get it all set up the same, then maybe format the HD here and install 8.1.

Hmm, I just dug up an Asus Win 7 recovery disk for this PC...

You can disable windows Updates in Services. Just do a search for Services, scroll down to Wondows Update, double click on it and disable. You just have to remember to enable it again when you have some free time and check for updates.

Just took a look at my video driver. Hmmm.. The monitor itself is listed as a pnp monitor. I guess no drivers necessary.

Ran a search. Apparently this is the latest. Sometimes hardware can become obsolete with a new OS. We saw that with Windows 10 on Jennifer's old PC, where the USB wifi adapter wouldn't work and had no updates from the manufacturer.

    (Launch services.msc.)

Cool. I didn't know about this.

It prevents manual use of Windows Update, but that's not a tragedy.

One site suggested that Security updates won't be blocked, but that's not bad.

Yes, if you have Windows 10 Home, it's the only sure fired way to stop the updates. Setting your connection to Metered will delay the updates, but eventually they come through.
