Where are Win 10 Start Menu Program Properties (like "Start in")?

Guys, I was just forced at work to change my beloved Win 7 box to Win 10 spyware as a service.

One aspect of Win 10 that I cannot figure out is how I can access Properties for the programs that I have added to the Start Menu.

In Win 7, if I left click on the Start Menu, and then right click on a program that I added to the Start Menu, a context menu appears. Its last choice is an option called "Properties". If you select that, a dialog box appears. It opens by default to the Shortcut tab, which has all sorts of useful options that you can set for the program, such as "Start in" (i.e. what folder the program will use as its initial directory when you launch it from the Start menu).

In contrast, in Win 10, if I left click on the Start Menu, I do not see how I can access the equivalent functionality for the programs that I have placed there. In particular, right clicking on the program's tile does not bring up any context menu.

Is this functionality hidden elsewhere? Or, has Microsoft sacrificed desktop users once again on the altar of mobile compatibility?

    :)

    Windows 10 start menu

I just upgraded from windows 8.1 to windows 10 and I honestly feel like crying. I hate the old style left corner start menu. Is there any way to setup win 10 to have a win8-likemetro menu? I know a lot of people were bashing the win8 start menu, but it
was far better than out-dated win 7 and now the "new" win 10 start menu. It simply took less mouse clicks to get to where you want to be.

Well - you come to a forum for help and start with childish statements like windows 10 spyware as a service. Great way to annoy those you want help from eh?

Are you talking about apps from Store or desktop programs?

It is true though, Windows 10 collects more personal data and takes away more user choice than any OS ever before. ScamDrive is integrated into it as well. Telemetry data cannot be disabled. Windows Updates cannot be disabled. Etc.

This is most likely the case. A lot of right click context menus have been re/moved.

For the most part, the Start Menu is comprised of 'pointer files' written in XAML, you must right click on the 'shortcut', hover on 'More' then click on 'Open File Location', that will bring you to the actual shortcut.

Windows will only send home information if you leave all of the defaults on. When all items that allow the OS to phone home, let apps use your personal info. That falls back on the person who set up the OS.

Also using terms like Scamdrive will get your posts to drift off to not be answered.

Again if you do not turn off Telemetry items, the OS will do as it was programed. Windows updates have to stay enabled, because 10 is still considered a Beta product until Redstone comes out.

The Anniversary update/Service Pack on Aug. 2nd, will remove some items, fix some ongoing issues and upgrade items like the Edge Browser.

Considered by whom? By definition it is no longer a Beta once officially released. Beta means pre-release.

All software has issues in its infancy. These get resolved, and new bugs get introduced as software matures.

So is RS1 still a beta as RS2 will come later etc? No of course not.

  10. Right click tile > More > Open file location > Right click shortcut > should find what your looking for. Won't work for store Apps though.

By the fact that Microsoft is still pushing out updates that the Insiders make sure that they are good before everyone gets them. Windows 10 will be in Beta until Redstone, which is the major and final upgrade to the OS.

Of course Insiders pre-release versions are "betas"by definition. Equally by definition 10586 is not.

You say "Windows 10 will be in Beta until Redstone, which is the major and final upgrade to the OS."

Nonsense - it is a major upgrade but not the FINAL upgrade. One is already planned for next year - currently dubbed Redstone 2.

It is clear you are unaware of the new development model for Windows 10 which is called "Window as a Service".

This basically means we will get a series of build upgrades for the foreseeable future, at least for next two-three years and perhaps slowing down after that.

The "pre-releases" are Alphas. The update packages that everyone is using are Beta's. The last major fix, which was Threshold 1, was because there was a bunch of bugs in the software when the Software team was pushed by Sales and Management to get 10 out to the consumers and kill off 7 and 8. That was because Sales wants to try and be like Apple and have a seamless platform across multiple devices that can run various forms of Windows 10.

At this time it is pretty much off subject about your original request.

Imo you are using the terminology incorrectly. Subject closed.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

I tried doing exactly what you said, but after I do the Open file location step, what happens is that a new File Explorer instance is launched which views the folder that contains the tile program. There is (generally speaking) no shortcut inside that folder--instead, that folder contains the real program.

It looks like the old Win 7 Start menu's Properties menu functionality seems to have totally disappeared, I am sad to report.
