Which SSD optimizations still make sense?

I've recently found an old to-do list of things to optimize an SSD. Some of them are definitely not needed anymore, while I'm not totally sure about others, so I'm going to list those where I got doubts here below:

    1) Turn Off Indexing
    2) Disable Hibernation
    3) Disable ClearPageFileAtShutdown and LargeSystemCache
    4) Disable Windows Search
    5) Disable PreFetch and SuperFetch
    6) Enable Write Caching

    :)

  2. Windows 10 can not optimize HDD, says it is a SSD Help

    Hi Steve,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Community.

Appreciate your efforts to work on this issue.

    • Does the BIOS recognizes the disk as HDD or SSD?

Suggest you to set the Optimize Drives Service to start automatically from the services window to check if that helps.

    1. Open the run window, type ‘services.msc’ and press Enter.
    2. Search for Optimize Drives Service and select the start-up type as automatic. Also ensure to start the service.

If you have set SATA controller to AHCI mode for Solid State Drive, in Device Manager it would show as SATA hard disk.

    Follow these steps:

    1. Click start, type “Defragment” and click “Defragment and Optimize your drives”.
    2. On the “Defragment and Optimize your drives” window. Make sure that your SSD is categorized as an SSD.
    3. If it’s not, then you can set it as a SSD on your bios. This way, you don’t have to exclude your SSD or disable any scheduled defragmentation.
Disclaimer: Modifying BIOS/ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring
of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

    Hope this helps.

Let us know if you got the help you needed.

    SSD Optimization

    Hi Jack

Microsoft don't recommend optimizing an SSD only HDD's, it is just they have not removed SSD's form the optimize list . . .

With regards to TRIM, you will not find that in a search, because it is not an application, it is a function of Windows that is turned on automatically, once Windows detects an SSD

Click your Start Button, then just type cmd and hit Enter

Paste this into Command prompt and hit Enter

    fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify

    Does that command return a 0 i

I so, trim is turned on and you are good to go . .

    SSD Optimization

    Hi Markosmalliarakis,

I'm sorry it's strange question. You have suggested I look at a link about updating to 1903 and creating installation media, not sure why. You suggest I use the op system as it's designed which I'm quite happy to do, unfortunately things can go wrong...

So can I go back to square 1? My C disk is an SSD. I suspect an SSD is as likely to break down as anything else and would need to be replaced. In view of this I create an image of this C disk to an external HDD on a monthly basis so that IF I have to replace
the C disk I can copy the latest image onto it. Is this so strange?

As well as creating an image regularly I also create one should there be an updated version of Windows 10 as has happened to me, I now have 1903.

As explained in my initial post I found the image creation having updated to 1903 took far longer than I had expected, I discovered that 'optimization' had not taken place for 31 days. I initiated optimization after which creating the image again was much
quicker. From this I inferred that optimization is a good thing.

Now I am told by DaveM121 I should NEVER optimize my SSD and rely on the trim feature. The recommendation by Microsoft to optimize is a mistake. I have changed my settings so optimization is disabled on the SSD. I will be creating another image on Oct 1st
and making careful note of how long it takes.

I have looked at various websites regarding SSD optimization, a lot of conflicting information.
