Windows 10: White screen with vertical lines after sleep mode

From what I've read this is a driver issue and MS does not fix manufacture drivers. It might be argued that they should take that driver down from Window Updates however it is likely the driver is valid on a majority of gear. That is a speculation.

I would be reporting issue on Windows Feedback Hub but I would also be going straight to Intel, not sure where in this very large corporation, and voicing my concerns there.

My MSI laptop downloaded/installed the Windows 1709 update (Fall Creator Update, I assume) on Friday and now I'm having this problem. I am not a tech person at all, so I'm just blindly stumbling around for a fix, but nothing is really seeming like the correct answer in my case.

I can't roll back my graphics card drivers through device manager. I'm assuming the graphics cards in question are an Intel(R) HD Graphics 530 and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M, but the Device Manager info on both of those say their drivers are dated 7/24/2017 and 5/1/2017 respectively, so I don't understand why they would be the problem.

Either way, I would not understand how to install drivers manually anyway -- which version do I look for? Where do I look? How do I know if it's compatible with my specific computer?

I am terrified of rolling back the full windows update, since I don't know what that will do -- I've never done anything like that before. I don't have an external harddrive I could use to back up my files right now. Anyway, I understand that rolling the update back will just be a band-aid on the problem, since I will eventually have to update it again.

While this is not the time to lecture you will pardon me. Everyone who has valuable data needs to have a backup. There are free tools and Window processes to create. Do you happen to know how much data you have? In a lot of cases a 64GB USB key is all you need. To determine, right click on your documents folder, then properties. Do the same with each major library. If the number is reasonable a USB thumb drive may be all you need to copy to. Enough said.

Then once back up and running we need to adjust your network connections to prevent V1709 from re-installing for a couple of months while the powers to be repair what ever it is that is broken. To do this

Start > Settings > Network and internet. I will assume you are wireless. Click on Wi-fi (left hand side) then click on your network, right hand side and then click on Manage. In the panel that opens set connection to "Metered". You will have to do this for all wireless networks you use.

Next I would open Device manager and note the drivers you are using, manufacturer, date and version. To do...

Right click Start, left click device manager, then expand your Display adapters. On each right click and then click properties. Get the details from the Driver tab.

Looking at the provided tutorial, I'm not sure if I'll be able to restore my older version of windows. It says that the space required on my C: drive is twice the size of C:\Windows.old and after deleting pretty much anything I could think of deleting, I can't get the C: drive anywhere close to that in terms of available space (it's currently at 36.5GB of 136GB total capacity, while my C:\Windows.old folder reads at 38.9GB). Even deleting all my documents and pictures would only free up 5GB at most. I have no clue what I could do to double the available space, as the tutorial recommends.

 

If you have this issue only when your laptop comes out of sleep mode, when or why do you feel the need to use the sleep mode? If it's at night, you can always just shut down the laptop.

 

Can it be as simple an answer as convenience? It takes a while for my Windows Live Mail to re-load after every boot up, I don't particularly like the idea of having to re-start every app I have running or shutting each one down every day. If I shut my computer and then get up in the middle of the night to quickly check something, I don't want to wait for it to boot up again only to then shut it down a moment later, and if I want to shut it during the day as I'm doing other things I don't want to have it running the entire time because it's a waste of energy. I liked being able to shut the lid of my computer, send it to sleep mode, and know that I could open it again and go right back to what I was doing within seconds.

I know it's not a critical thing, but sleep mode was convenient for me and how I use my laptop. I'm just disappointed that following Windows' advice and regularly updating the system has removed a pretty standard ability.

 

Well the good news out of all of this is you know how big your data files are and can copy them to a USB Thumb drive.

Before we proceed further could you please update your system specs with actual model number of laptop. The Nvida card doesn't match your problem description, could you also please clarify this.

My thought process is to get the drivers right from Laptop manufacture and the load them.

Okay, I am not really sure what number on the bottom of my computer is the model number. Would it be a really long number or a short number like MS-16J5?

As for the card, going through Device Manager tells me that I have two Display Adapters: Intel(R) HD Graphics 530 and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M. If I go through Settings, it only pulls up the Intel(R) HD Graphics 530.

 

Based on the suggestion from a masterful Forum user, I installed this driver set (Download Intel® Graphics Driver for Windows* [15.60]), restarted my computer, and Viola! The problem disappears.

MS-16J5 does not appear to be model number or I can't match it on the MSI site.

TheMeetingGuy has supplied a driver. In looking at what it supports, both your processor and HD graphics are listed. It would appear to be a good candidate to go with.

Did you back up your data to a USB thumb drive?

Open your device manager and then get the driver version number for your Intel 530 (Right click Start, left click Device manager, expand display adapters, right click Intel 530, click on properties, click on Driver tab.) We want the driver number to confirm installation.

Download driver and double click to commence install. It will likely tell you the folder it is going to be installed in. Note folder. (May need it if we are forced later to "Browse" to a location.)

Once installed open device manager, expand Display adapters and determine if the driver version has changed for Intel 530. If it has then exit out and use one of these processes to disable Windows updating drivers.

Enable or Disable Driver Updates in Windows Update in Windows 10

If the driver was not updated to older version make your way back through device manager to that 530 adapter. Right click, this time pick "Update Driver", then pick "Browse my computer for Driver software", then on next screen you get "Let me pick from a list........". You should likely see at least two drivers. If this is like my Intel Wireless there is no version number so you may have to do this twice to get older driver. Once you have older driver installed, check its properties in the driver tab within device manager, use link above to disable driver updates. If you didn't get more than one driver to choose from post back, will likely have to browse to the install folder.

Assuming you got older driver installed, test.

Not sure why only one display adapter is showing in Settings. If you have the wake from sleep working again please check again.

Yes, the driver changes seems to have fixed the problem! Thank you so much for walking me through this, Ken!

The one display adapter is still all that's showing in Settings, but that's a mystery that might need to wait for another day.
