Windows 10: Why cant I update Windows 10 on my PC?

I built a PC for the first time in summer ‘20. It works fine other than the fact that it will not update Windows 10. When I open Windows 10 Update Assistant it tells me I’m running version 1809, and the latest version is 20H2. Next page tells me my computer is compatible, and then the update begins. Towards the end of the update the computer screen goes black, the system reboots, and no update is applied.

So far I’ve checked my BIOS date which was current. From there I don’t really know where to go.

One thing that I think could be an issue is that the SSD I installed was from my old used Dell XPS that ended up being a lemon. I have Windows operating off that drive, and then installed another SSD for my main storage.

Anybody have an idea what direction I should go here?

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

Microsoft to make Windows 10 updates mandatory

Well, at the moment at least, you can choose to defer upgrades. Under Settings > Windows Updates > Advanced options you need to check the box labeled "Defer upgrades". What does that do? Good question. The answer I've found might illuminate it to a degree.
