Windows 10: Why do I have a desktop folder on actual desktop.

I have a folder named "desktop" on my actual desktop. The same identical desktop folder as in file explorer. When I save a document to desktop it is being saved to the weird desktop folder on my desktop and in file explorer's desktop but is not showing on the desktop proper. I can drug that document to the desktop proper but cannot save directly to desktop. Erasing the weird "desktop" folder from the desktop proper erases desktop folder from file explorer. I moved location of my desktop, documents and download folders to d:\ from their original location on c:\. Any suggestions?Thank you.

Step 1 - I upgraded to Win 10 and lost all my files on Desktop.

Step 2 - Found the files in Network - USers- Desktop

copied all files again to desktop.

Step 3- Restarted my machine again and lost desktop files again.

Step 4 - As suggested did the following as listed below but dont find my files.

• Press “Windows + E”, open This PC/Computer
• Open Local Disc C, open Windows.old
• Click on Users, select your User name
• Go to desktop folder

Cant find my files. Why is Win 10 deleted files again and again from Desktop ?.

That sounded like the solution but actually it didn't work at all.

I solved in another way, and NOTHING else worked (I've been trying for weeks):

1. Rename your desktop folder, something like "olddesktop";
   
2. Create a new folder called "Desktop";
   
3. Apply the Desktop icon stored in imageres.dll (the folder behind the desktop will appear automatically with the imageres.dll icon, the SHELL32.dll icon is just the desktop with no folder behind);
   
4. Right-click the old folder and use the "Path" tab to move its content to the new folder;
   
5. Delete the "olddesktop" folder;
   
6. Refresh your user folder with the F5 key.

Regarding the encryption issue you're experiencing, it seems like there might be some lingering encryption settings causing new files to be automatically encrypted when saved to the desktop. To address this, you can try the following steps:

1. Check Current Encryption Status:
   
   • Right-click on your desktop and select "Properties."
     
   • In the "General" tab, check if there's a checkbox labeled "Encrypt contents to secure data." If it's checked, uncheck it.
     
2. Clear Encryption Attribute from Desktop:
   
   • Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
     
   • Navigate to your desktop directory by typing:
     
     cd C:\Users\<your_username>\Desktop
     
   • Run the command: This command will attempt to decrypt all files on the desktop.
     
     cipher /d /a /s:
     
3. Disabling Encryption on Desktop Folder:
   
   • If the above steps don't resolve the issue, try disabling encryption on the entire Desktop folder again.
     
   • Right-click on your desktop folder, select "Properties," go to the "General" tab, and click "Advanced."
     
   • Uncheck the "Encrypt contents to secure data" option, but this time, don't apply the changes to the subfolders and files. Leave it unchecked for now.
