Why do I need to put my phone number to check check my identity when i log into my outlook work email?

Things have changed a lot since 2015.

It may be required to remove and refresh the phone partnership from the primary Microsoft account. Instructions are found at:

I suggest also check the many other new options in the Outlook Mail web settings.

Some further guesses, if the above fails to restore normal functionality:

The account may have two-step verification enabled. This should not alter on its own, of course, but please verify if this is the case?

- Two-step verification can be turned off temporarily while troubleshooting.

Or the account is temporarily locked for some reason. It should notify about this, but the notification requires a different email or a phone number configured in the security settings for the account.

The page has an option to set up identity verification apps (Microsoft Authenticator) for two-step verification.

Outlook Email stopped checking for new mail

Thanks very helpful, will certainly try the suggestions.

Seems many things have changed such as the loss of Outlook Connector for accessing mail & calendar in Outlook 2003 mail client - can only use POP3 or IMAP now with loss of calendar sync etc. Thought using that old but very good client would eventually be
axed by MSFT - no big deal will probably use Thunderbird now on the PC.

 

Incoming number is not recognised by phone after syncing with Outlook

I have chosen to disable that feature from outlook. I really don't remember how that all came about, but likely the Outlook elp says:

Add the country code to numbers you enter

In Contacts, on the Actions menu, point to Call Contact, and then click New Call.

Click Dialing Options.

Select the Automatically add country code to local phone numbers check box.

The country/region code added is for the selection in the Country/region list on the General tab of the Edit Location dialog box (in the New Call dialog box, click Dialing Properties, and then click Edit).

Note If the Automatically add country code to local phone numbers check box is not available, Microsoft Outlook doesn't recognize the phone number format for the specified country code and cannot automatically format phone numbers.

So my suggestion, disable the automatic thingy, it adds those () and spaces and Nokia phones don't like them.
