Windows 10: Why does Internet Settings not show my Default Web Browser?

Many months ago, on my Windows 10 laptop, I went to Default Apps > Web Browser and changed to Microsoft Edge.


However, every now and again, I get messages from various internet sites saying my browser is not supported.

When I then look at Internet Options > Programs, this still shows "Make Internet Explorer the default browser". Clicking this takes me back to Default Apps which still shows Edge! Also, there's a message in grey stating: "Always in Internet Explorer on the desktop"


How can I get Edge to really be my defult web browser? and get rid of Internet Explorer?

Cannot set default web browser

Step 1:

Go to Search box next to Windows icon and type Default app Settings

Step 2:

Click to open Default app Settings

Step 3:

Under choose, default apps scroll down to see the Web browser

Step 4:

Click on the Browser shown to get the default browsers list to select from

Step 5:

Select Google Chrome

how to set Internet Explorer as default browser in Windows 10

As you want to set Internet Explorer as the default browser, I suggest you to follow the steps below:

• Navigate to Start>Settings>System.
• In the left pane, click on Default Apps.
• In the right pane, under Web browser, click on Microsoft edge and select
  Internet Explorer.
• Restart the system and check.

I can't set my default web browser

It is unusual that you are unable to set a default web browser.

I would suggest you to try the steps below to choose a default web browser again and check if the issue persists.

1. Press Windows key + R.

2. Type control and press enter to open the control panel.

3. Type default programs in the control panel search box and open it.

4. Click "set your default programs".

5. From the list of programs, locate Google chrome or Microsoft edge, click on it and click "set this program as my default".

6. Save the changes and check again.
