Windows 10: Why does Microsoft Security make it so difficult at times to sign in?

I recently had to set up this new Lenovo Legion Y520 laptop because bad advice from a Directly Independent Advisor trashed my HP Envy.


These are just some of the Microsoft security and system problems I encountered:


1. It asked me to sign in with the last password I'd used. I had no idea as it was a long time ago that I switched to the PIN system. An option to set up and use a PIN was shown but my PIN was rejected - no reason was given.

2. It then showed "Challenge PIN A1B2C3" - I set up a PIN and got to the Welcome screen but as soon as I tried to get to the next stage, it told me that my PIN was incorrect and that I must restart my device - which I did.

3. This took me to the login screen and then asked for my PIN - which it rejected


4. It then said I'd entered the wrong password too many times and that I should restart my device - which I again did.

5. There was then this screen for a Recovery Code:



I entered my email address & it told me "We need to verify your account". It rejected my email address ("that email address is already associated with your account. Please enter a different email address.") I showed my wife's - we got the code and to cut a long story short, I ended up with four MS Recovery Codes.


6. It then told me that I could reset my password from the lock screen by going to account.live.com/password/reset

This is nonsense because I couldn't get that far!

7. Somehow I got to a screen that had the option to "reset password".

I clicked on the link and got this warning IN RED:

"The dictionary attack mitigation is triggeredand the provided authorization was ignored by the provider. Option: PIN/Security Key. Insert your Security Key into the USB Port." !!!

8. Next, there was a message "AADSTS900561 The endpoint only accepts POST requests - received a GET request."


And it carried on, and on, and on. I must have spent wasted five hours on this.


My question is Why was it so difficult?

Microsoft Edge TLS Security


After trying everything (not a lot of steps) listed in the Microsoft Edge support site, I did a wider search and found this very simple youtube video that fixed it immediately:

For those who prefer not to click links the steps are simple:

1. Click in the Cortana search bar next to the Win 10 Start button

2. Type internet options

3. Select internet options (control panel) from the list

4. Click on the advanced tab

5. Scroll down to the security section

6. Make sure the following are all clicked:
Use SSL 3.0
Use TLS 1.0
Use TLS 1.1
Use TLS 1.2

7. Click apply

8. Refresh the page that was giving the error and it should now connect.

Hope this helps, it was a 30 second fix after hours of pounding my head against the error with the Support site suggestions.
