Windows 10: Why does R9 380 perform worse than R9 280X?

Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1866Mhz Memory Kit CL9 1.5V
GPU: XFX Radeon R9 380 4GB
OS: Windows 10


I ran the unigine valley benchmark for both PCs. Results:

PC1 (with R9 280X)
FPS: 67.1
Score: 2806

PC2 (with R9 380)
FPS: 40.1
Score: 1680


PC2 is bottlenecked by the CPU/mobo, I think. So I swapped the GPUs over in the PCs and here are the new results:

PC1 (with R9 380):
FPS: 63.1
Score: 2642


PC2 (with R9 280X):
FPS: 40.5
Score: 1696


I expected PC1 with the R9 380 to be much better than all the tests, but it wasn't, it was slower than the R9 280X. I was not surprised that the R9 380 in PC2 was no better than the R9 280 because it's being bottlenecked. Any ideas on why the R9 380 is so underwhelming?

Maybe it's that PC2 has a lesser processor then PC1

 

It's true it does, but it doesn't make sense. Why doesn't the 380 really shine when put in PC1?

 

I do not know the cards well, as said Intel Processor is bit better then the other AMD, is my educated guess without looking into other hardware in each like the motherboard and benchmark of these cards.

 

I have no personal familiarity with the cards.

The main obvious superiority of the 280x is that it has more VRAM and a 384 bit path to it. Given the similar memory clocks, it would have more than 1.5X the memory bandwidth of the 380.

You may have the false impression that a newer card must be superior to an older one.

 

The difference in fps is only 4 with with PC1...Wait for driver updates and r9 380 will improve performance over time.Which drivers are you using? Crimson or old ccatalyst drivers???

 

280 and 380 are not that far apart performance wise and 280 with "X" is factory OCed.
While gaming, check how much are CPU and GPU utilized, that will give you results to compare CPU and GPU "power".
On second system, processor is probably hitting close to 100% and that would indicate a bottleneck. Turning off IGPU and OCing processor a bit may help.
