Windows 10: WHY is Chrome such a pig these days?

Even with only 4GB of RAM running Chrome really is not an issue for me..



Check this out Running Chrome with FireFox I only am using 28% of my RAM or 2.24GB or RAM. So, 4GB would work fine and 8GB is perfect, IMO. And yes, spending about 90$ for good Corsair RAM is a bit but in the long run it's well worth it, again, IMO, *Biggrin

 

I have been using Opera also. I like it best so far.

 

Hi guys; I have Google chrome installed on all these machines and don't trade it for any other browser and it's pretty fast and safe on every OPS no matter how old, and other thing ,GOOGLE CHROME + ADBLOCK PLUS i feel complete safe of damn adds, special on my favorite streaming site (firtrowsports).

People always mention adblock, but forget about flashblock, flash banners actually cause high CPU/RAM usage, not necessarily blocked by adblock. Another issue are animated pictures like gif, not to mention HTML5, which are more difficult to block. One more thing - tracking cookies, you might think, that 1KB file is harmless, but if you have got hundreds of them, they can become quite a drag over time and since each webpage sets about 5 of them, it gets bloated pretty quickly. Either use CCleaner to delete all but exceptions or Vanilla Cookie Manager, which can be set to delete all cookies except exceptions every 5 minutes.

 

I wanna upgrade my RAM to at least 8GB that way all my programs can run flawlessly and nothing else will slow down my pc but 16GB would be even better *Biggrin

 

I realize this is an old discussion but something weird happened to Chrome - don't recall when but probably between Nov 2014 and March 2015.... Chrome would claim it could not locate your profile (even when you never asked it to) and the tiny icons next to bookmarks would turn into blank pages. I read somewhere to try to "flush the sockets" which involved going here: chrome://net-internals/#sockets

I know almost nothing about this stuff but when I read about Chrome being a pig, which I know is sometimes true, I wondered if trying this would help. If I am totally wrong, I apologize - it was just a thought.

I have found that using Tabs Outliner from the Chrome Store to save tabs for future use so you don't have to keep them open all the time works really well for me since I tend to have 20 to 50 tabs open at once if I am not careful to close after use. In Tabs Outliner I mark the entire window to be saved (after paring down the # of tabs), and then use Task Manager to close Chrome's tabs entirely, then restart Chrome and usually the pig problem decreases to a tolerable amount.

 

I don't know the specifics of the case you raise in point, but there is a known corruption problem with Chrome that I think is still extant: how/why it triggers on some and not others I haven't read a convincing argument of. the 'cure' according to the Chrome forums is to save off the valuables, uninstall chrome, nuke all chrome data completely from the user's Profile [must expose OS files view to accomplish], reboot, reinstall chrome, import data.

I used Chrome a bit on 3 different windows 10 platforms I had up and running and I still see it as a pig. Edge may be worse however if you watch carefully Perfmon while things are in swing. pretty bad so far, but the one area where IE11 shines is shared by Edge [per notes above]: its is very efficient on youtube vids in high-def. Chrome, amazingly, is the worst. There MUST be some secret somewhere about how to either invoke or revoke hardware acceleration in a way that optimizes efficiency. Despite Chrome's obscene resource use, it provides no benefit in doing so.

and while I'm on the subject - i have several times now passed on to MS Feedback my view that not addressing Ad blocking [and related] in Edge [to this point] is a SERIOUS error that unforgivably exposes users to many of the worst malware variants afoot today. I simply will not use, nor recommend, any browser that lacks such accomodations.
I imagine MS wanted to "lead the charge" in attracting & accomodating advertisers of any/every stripe to their cause no matter the risk to users.

I did try the steps you outlined for fixing this glitch, but, it didn't work for me. However, flushing sockets did work for me even though I didn't really understand it. I eventually kind of figured out what it meant. There was a very long discussion in the Chrome user forums when this was at its worst. When the next update came along, the same thing happened to me. But I tried the same method of fixing and it again worked for me.

I agree Chrome is an incredible resource hog. But then I do wonder if it is my fault for having so many tabs open. But - it is absolutely at its *worst* when more than one tab is on a video, and sometimes, even if only one is on a video.
