Windows 10: Why is my audio input not working?

This has been frustrating me to no end. No matter what input device I use, be it a headset microphone plugged into a cable extender, or a set of apple earbuds plugged directly into the headphone jack, only the built-in and default microphone my computer came with allows my voice to come through. It was working perfectly yesterday, even if my input volume was a little quiet, but today it's not working. None of my troubleshooting has fixed this, and I restarted my PC MULTIPLE TIMES. As someone who really enjoys joining Discord calls with friends, not having my audio input work is very distressin

1. I'm wondering if by audio not working you mean the audio input or audio output is not working properly? Or does it mean that both of them are not working properly?



2. I would like to know when this started happening? Did you make any changes before that?



3. I would like to know if the audio is not working properly when you are using external speakers or headphones? Or are you experiencing this problem using your computer's default speakers and microphone?

Alternatively, if you have not tried some of the troubleshooting steps on your own, then you can try the following basic troubleshooting steps first.

1. Check Audio Device Connections:
   
   • Ensure that your audio devices (e.g., headphones, speakers) are properly connected to your computer or device. If you're using external speakers or headphones, make sure they are plugged in correctly and powered on.
     
2. Audio Output/Input Selection:
   
   • Verify that the correct audio output/input device is selected in your system settings. In Windows, right-click the speaker icon in the system tray and select "Open Sound settings" to check the output/input device.

Windows 10 Audio input to programs broken

Recently my audio input, from USB headset and USB guitar cable have stopped working. Going into Windows 'Sounds' and enabling 'Listen to this device' outputs the audio as expected; the problem is not with the devices. However, as soon as I try to use them with any other program, discord, for example, no audio input is detected by discord.

I have tried everything I can think of and some suggestions from Googling around;

• Updating everything - windows, drivers, all related software
  
• Rolling windows back to the last build
  
• Trying different USB ports
  
• Reinstalling drivers and software
  
• Running Windows troubleshooters
  
• Playing with device properties settings
  

But nothing seems to work, any suggestions?
