Windows 10: Why would I change from Windows 7 to Windows 10

I installed Windows 7 back at this stage of development as well, and I remember these same comments. People just couldn't see why they'd switch away from XP, but could easily see why they'd switch from Vista. I can now, as I could then, see the appeal of sticking with what's comfortable over risking change.

For me, however, I'm a first-adopter... Vista was the only home-PC version of Windows I've skipped since 3.1. (And only because I was broke at the time.) Yeah, it's led to some heartache over the years, with things like Millenium Edition and the awful UI that balanced out the performance enhancements of Windows 8. But, for me, I get bored stuck in the same OS for too long at a time.

 

Ahh.. so the question isn't why YOU would want to upgrade, since you clearly don't want to.

The question is why would anyone want to? And that's very different argument.

Hmm, how would that get you to "All Control Panel Items" ?? Why don't you try it and find out instead of wondering about it?

BTW, it works the same as in Win 7 & Win 8.

I won't be upgrading my W7 installation on this PC regardless of whether I like W10 or not. But I do have another W8 installation that I would consider, if the final W10 product turns out to be something I like. At this moment I would say the answer is no, but I'm keeping an open mind.

 

I am with you Wolfgang. I see no reason to give up several Windows 7 computers that just work , look good and just get on with whatever task they are given, such as media center x 2 and my 4 desktop machines which I use for many tasks. As for 8 and 10 having built in Virtualization this does not hold a candle to Workstation 11 which I upgraded to as a Christmas present program to myself. I also don't care about Windows File explorer as I use mainly Directory Opus 11 on my main machines. The only thing I like about 8 or 10 is the map program. I have a couple of good map programs and use Google Maps too. I will be overwriting my 8.1 installations with 10. If I have to pay for Media Center I won't be doing upgrades to that. I don't understand why on earth the OS has all the bells and whistles and internet crap tacked on. I want my files stored locally (3 times on 4 machines and another copy of some on a external drive). I do not want or need the cloud integration. I want the core OS to be fast reliable and to look good. So far to my mind it has nothing over Windows 7 Ultimate or Pro. If you have the base 7 OS Starter or Home Basic there is a good reason to change as it would appear to give you more. Most people get Home Premium which means the core version of 10 which we do not know much about yet. I think the integration of Bing search and the constant phoning home and data mining has no place in an operating system which should be there to drive the hardware for me wether I am running Winamp to listen to music while editing photos or playing games. Windows 10 still after many requests does not contain a Windows 2000 desktop mode, still does not contain Windows 7 type interface which is surely the best looking OS ever after many requests. Frankly I feel they will have a hard time giving this away free to Windows 7 users.

I think you are right. W10 is an improved release of W8.1. It is probably a good idea to upgrade W8.1 systems with it. But hard core W7 users should not budge.
