Windows 10: wi-fi range extender, distance and square footage claims ?

Of course Cisco should be connected to the internet if you want the Netgear to connect to the internet,too.

 

I haven't been able to change anything on the Netgear, and I cannot log into the admin page to do anything.

 

Read the manual. It should tell you how to login. But normally, if your router is connected to the network, just type "192.168.1.1" and then it will ask you for username and password. The default username is "admin" and the default password is either "admin" or "password".

But it should be connected to the modem not to the Cisco router. You have to temporarily switch the routers first until you are done with the changes on the Netgear.

Go to youtube. There are lots of tutorials there on how to enable AP on Netgear.

 

Here is the setup that doesn't work.

laptop --- ethernet cable --- Netgear --- cable modem. It doesn't bring up any configuration page, but did briefly today and briefly yesterday. It says limited, even after I reset both Neatgear router and the cable modem. No internet access.

Also tried laptop wireless to Netgear. The Netgear was either wireless to the Cisco, or Ethernet cnnected to the cable modem. Neither method worked.

In order to post here, I have to take the Neatgear out of the circuit, and put the Cisco back in the circuit.

the booklet says to use routerlogin.net which today gives me a not found.

192.x just spins and spins. no connection.

 

The router is probably not plug and play. Did it come with a CD? You have to set it up for first time use. It should come with a Quick Start guide. Follow that guide.

 

I followed the guide, no CD.

I got in the admin menu twice on Wednesday, and twice on Thursday. I cannot stay in long enough to accomplish anything. Nothing is changed, except the password. I would love to work on the settings, but no luck so far.

When I connect to the Netgear. I get the same thing, Identifying Network. 15-20 minutes later, 'Unknown Network'. It never pops up the select window for home or work network. I left it connected for an hour and 30 minutes while we went out. Still no connection.

I would love to get this thing working. But it just doesn't look like it will.

We have been talking about getting a new cable modem from the cable company as rhis one is rented. But this isn't the 'new tech' area for a number of things. Well, cell phones and iPads are all up to date. It could be the cable modem just doesn't realize the Netgear is a router. The connectivity light doesn't blink on the cable modem when the Netgear is cabled to it. I have used more than one Ethernet cable to make sure that wasn't the problem.

 

I would love to help you on this but I need to know what is your long term plan for this. Do you want to connect it as an access point (AP)? That means connecting it to the Cisco router and not to the modem.
If it's going to be an AP, first you have to enable AP. Disconnect the Cisco Router and connect the Netgear Router to the modem.
-The standard drill is to turn off the modem first.
-Connect the Netgear (WAN port) to the modem.
-Connect the PC to the Netgear (ethernet cable port 1)
-Then plug in the Netgear to the power source.
-Then turn on (power on) the modem first and let it cycle till all proper light indicators are working.
-Then power on the Netgear and let it cycle.
-Then restart your PC.

Let me know if you got it connected to the internet after that. We'll go to the next step after that.

Those are the steps I did... 'limited' is the result. So something is wrong I do believe.

 

If I can get into the admin menu, I'll try again to put it in AP mode.

My long term goal is to get connectivity out to the shack, about 120 feet away from the router.

 

Take the router you want to set up as an access point and reset to factory default. There should be a place in back marked reset. Usually have to keep depressed for 10 seconds or so. I usually do it while plugged in. Also you are only trying to make one router the access point, right?

 

Next take the router intended to be the access point close to the other router. Plug your laptop into the access point router and follow the instructions above. After you have it setup move the access point were you want it. You may have to restart both routers and the cable modem so that IP addresses can be assigned.

We need better wireless coverage due to the number of wireless items we have. Or I can run a cable out to the shack. My relatives have talked about a newer cable modem and run the cable out there. If I can get better wireless coverage by using two routers, I want them to work. I can take back the Neatgear... at this point I would be happier to do so.

The netgear certainly appears, on paper, to be the better product. But its not talking to the cable modem. No idea why. Much of this simply isn't working correctly in comparison to wireless at my last place of employment.

 

Read it. Been years since I stopped by tomshardware... certainly got harder to read items there. I copied and pasted into notepad what they suggested.
