Windows 10: wifi keeps switching from private to public

Hello everyone.


I have a strange problem on my laptop (Windows 10 home, ver 1803). My wireless connection worked for a year and a half without any problems, but this morning it suddenly switched from private to public and its name from the right one to "unidentified network" and I haven't been able to switch it back since then. Also, the buttons in the properties of the wireless connection that allows to switch from public to private have disappeared.

By the way, I have this problem only with the wireless connection. If I use the wired connection everything works.

I did a lot of things, but no one of them worked.

1. I ran the antivirus (bitdefender free).
2. I changed from DHCP to static IP.
3. I turned off IPv6 in the wireless adapter settings.
4. I deleted the wireless connection on my PC and on my router.
5. I did a sfc /scannow which found a corrupted file (storport.sys), but wasn't able to fix it. So I used the command DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth which fixed the problem (I ran the sfc /scannow again and it didn't show any corrupted files).
6. I updated the drivers of all the networks adapters (there were no updates).
7. I uninstalled all the network adapters without deleting the drivers and rebooted.
   
8. I uninstalled all the network adapters, but I deleted the drivers this time. And then rebooted.
   
9. I did a network reset from "network status".
10. I turned off fast startup in "power options" and rebooted.
    
11. I changed the wireless connection "Category" in the registry from "0" to "1" and rebooted.
12. I deleted the registry entry of my wireless connection and rebooted.
13. I used PowerShell and the commands Get-NetConnectionProfile and Set-NetConnectionProfile -InterfaceIndex NN -NetworkCategory Private.
14. I changed the value of the Channel Width from "Auto" to "20 Mhz" (a guy somewhere wrote that it can work sometimes) of both 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz in the advanced properties of my wireless adapter.
15. I tried a system restore to a point that I saved three days ago.
16. I talked with my Internet Provider.

I would really like to avoid formatting if it's possible, but I begin to think that it's the only way to solve this problem.

configure two network type wifi public and Ethernet private


Hello,

I have two network adapters in Windows 10 one wifi for connecting to internet and one Ethernet for local network.
I need to configure wifi adapter to public network and Ethernet to private network but i can't.

Inverse it work ( wifi to private and Ethernet to public ) but I don't need that.
(only wifi adapter have option to be discoverable by others pd in Network Settings -> advanced options )


I need to share files by Ethernet AND NOT by wifi.

Any suggestion?

Wifi private or public

I was wondering if I should save my home wifi as a public network or private network. When I was connecting to my home network on my computer it gave me an option to save it as a prisvte or public network. What are the benefits of it being set to private
network instead of public and would it be safier to set it to public? I got a virus on my computer somehow and I was wondeing was it because I set it to priavte since I read something about sharing files if on private

 

Missing option to switch from public to private network

Hello,

I am facing an issue to activate the connection to my LAN after an update of Windows 10.

The situation is the following:

- the connection options for both ethernet connection and wifi connection do not include anymore the option to switch to a private network.

- this implies that the router cannot see my PC and therefore is not getting an IP address and a gateway

- I have tried already to disable and enable the Ethernet driver,

- uninstall and reinstall the drivers, also using more update ones

- force a hard switch from public to private network through powershell commands

None of these actions are solving the problem.

I have not set a restore point and the "solve" options embedded in Windows 10 do not help (including restoring the connection).

I am still getting the message of non identified network, even if I succeeded in having the network appearing as "private" and not "public" as before.

Still no switch public/private appears in the menu.

What do you suggest?
