  2. What they could do, but likely won't, is keep everything in Control Panel as well as Settings. I personally won't ever give up CP. Although I see the slow migration from one to the other. You shouldn't do it all at once, people will be extremely lost. But at this point after six years, you'd think they would have more in Settings.

Perhaps some tech guru out there will come out with a utility to emulate the old functionality of CP, just like how Ivo created Classic Shell as a start menu replacement tool. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If you click on Start and scroll the left side to Windows System and Control Panel is listed. Right click Control Panel and you can pin it to the Start page. There is a More choice that lets you pin it to the Taskbar.

  4. Will Settings eventually replace Control Panel?

I don't have access to my Insider version right now, but I seem to remember that in one of the recent builds (maybe this last one, which I don't have installed), MS has already phased out Control Panel because I though there were posts from people indicating that it did not launch anymore. If that's the case, then it will already be gone in version 1803.

Yes, I remember that but it was just a bug (I hope).

  6. I dearly hope that's a bug. That better be just a bug.

You are saying things that are not generally correct. The settings setup with the more common features, and there is usually an advanced option that links to the old CP dialogues. The Control Panel is only the interface to the various dialogues.

There is no dumbing down, just things rearranged differently.

Many of the advanced menus do not easily lend to modern menu settings so I expect those to remain as is but accessed via avanced options rather than the old control panel interface.

Nothing has changed really - it is largely a cosmetic change and long overdue as CP is a mess.

And than there's also "God Mode".

  9. What was the need for "settings" at all? Control panel could do the job and is more visually appealing than the ugly, flat, boring, settings page. Perhaps it's just another nod to the "phone generation"

"Shared experience" thru all Windows devices is most likely reason. It's not just for phone generation, there are also tablets, netbooks and even cars and fridges and all kinds of touch only devices. Knowing all by knowing one can be handy.

    Hi there

I really have a problem with a lot of these "1-click" installs and "automatic configurers". When they work fine - but when they don't you are stuck. I think there should always be a "God-Mode" even if it's well hidden so the average user can't wreck his / her system easily.

Control panel is fine -- I don't really know why the settings thing ever came about -- fine for things like mobile phones / touch devices but when will people realize there's still a big population out there still using "Old fashioned computers" with often several large monitors and I defy anybody to do a lot of cutting and pasting or photoshop type editing without a mouse (or similar like a pen perhaps) device !!!

There's quite a few options on control panel that aren't on the settings either. They still exist but in all sorts of "funny places".

If you want control panel on your desktop just get to it in file location and send to desktop.

    Cheers

  12. After reading the posts on this thread, I had to add my 2 cents worth. I have pinned Control Panel to my taskbar. With a click, I instantly access Control Panel and all its features. I find the Settings mode cumbersome and prefer CP. I guess old habits die hard, but I just find CP easy to use, and Settings somewhat bothersome. There are often times when I try to find something unsuccessfully in Settings and easily access it with CP. Just sayin' ...

Will Settings eventually replace Control Panel?

One of the first things I did when I moved to W10 when it first came out was to "pin" the Control Panel shortcut to the task bar.

I have no need for constant access to either Control panel or Settings (only for update section) so I have CP and God mode on desktop only and if I don't want to drop to desktop I just run "control" and there it is.

  15. Exactly.

These days, the more clicks/pokes it takes to get something done, the more productive you are (apparently). *Confused

    Agreed. *Smile

    Touchscreen UIs are horribly limited.
"Old fashioned computers" are being punished as a result.
