What I didn't get from that are the minimum system requirements. Did I miss it? Can somebody fill me in?

Nice concept, but I don't think that it will be anything close to that. You may see the Desktop app in 9, but by 10 it may be gone for good. I think 9 will be all the more Modern/Metro orientated interface as we see in 8/8.1. The Start Screen with tiles, especially live tiles, are all to important for MS's concept of "personalizing" a Pc/device. We saw more of this integration from 8 to 8.1. We see more Settings via the interface in Charms/PC Settings. Such items like SkyDrive being an integral part with File Explorer folder and app. The Microsoft-created quintuplet Store apps (Mail, People, Calendar, Photos, and Bing) being much improved. I think File Explorer will be replaced by the SkyDrive app.

All in all as time goes on we will see more of this.

    Will this be Windows 9?

Nice concept, Hope that this type of design will be used.
MS is going to cater to their largest market, the average users, who are migrating towards mobile devices. So expect things to move in that direction. The only hope power users will have is if they decide to make a alternate or modified option for power users and enterprise. Not all enterprise users will need this version, time will tell.

Microsoft seems to hsve designed a mobile OS, to appeal to the younger more mobile users. They seem to be aiming at the social media types, which we may look back and say it was a very good move on their part. However, a large base which has been left out is not only the enthusiast/ Power user But also the corporate production oriented types. Those are not that intrested in social media, and in fact, typically frown on it. The production oriented crowd are not very excited about windows 8/8.1. Those are a significant percentage of Microsoft's buisness and I don't believe that Microsoft is going to abandon those users. I can't help but believe Microsoft will release an OS that will address the needs of those users. Not doing so would be a big mistake on Microsoft's part, in my opinion.

Agreed. The social media stuff... its ok on a phone maybe but I wouldn't want it cluttering my work PC. Serves no purpose there.

I agree that it would be a mistake on Microsoft's part to try and push a mobile type OS like Windows 8 on businesses and I would think they are smarter than that. The OS is only a part of the revenue Microsoft generates, as productivity software accounts for a substantial amount as well.

Little Jay, while I agree with you in general, they first have to put out an OS that Business wants to adopt before they can sell the productivity software to them. So far, from all reports, they have not done that and from appearances are not heading in that direction. Consider how long it took Microsoft to move businesses from XP to Windows 7, which is a much better OS for business than Windows 8 is. In fact, that's why they made XP mode an option for Windows 7, so business could more easily transition to 7. And the move from XP to 7 was not nearly as drastic as the move to 8 would be.

Only time will tell what's really coming our way. I DO hope they get it right - and I'm certainly looking forward to 9 - but lately MS seems to be hopping on to the popularity bandwagon...

I agree with you about developing an OS for businesses. My first reply wasn't very clear on that point. What I was trying to say is the OS is only part of the equation and that the revenue generate from productivity software is even greater. If Microsoft doesn't develop an OS that will support that productivity software, then businesses will either hang on to older versions, or look for alternatives and I have to believe that Microsoft wouldn't want that to happen and risk losing a very large part of their revenue stream.

I just hope that they will develop 9 to be a purely desktop OS and leave 8 on mobile/all-in-one/tablet devices. My ears are bleeding whenever I hear the word "apps".

Some of us want that, but some don't care, and many like the whole mobile/app thing. And MS sees dollar signs in apps, and yearly subscriptions, etc., etc. They want a unified OS that looks the same across every device. That means moving away from the desktop, and more towards what we don't like. It's a damn shame. They could easily make 2 flavors, but that isn't what they want.

    Will this be Windows 9?

Exactly. Or at least there should be an option from the "First time use" screen to choose between "desktop" or "mobile" version. Then everyone will be happy. *Smile

  14. Windows 8.1, with the Classic Shell 4.0 installed and some old Tweaks make it the best of both worlds. a new and faster OS, with the look and feel of an old comfortable shoe. I can live with it.
