Windows 10: Win 10 1607, is it needed?

Discus and support Win 10 1607, is it needed? in Windows 10 Updates and Activation to solve the problem; I get that and my build is apparently old according to NavyLCDR. How do get the latest build and will that allow me to get 1607? Discussion in 'Windows 10 Updates and Activation' started by Brian925, Dec 27, 2016.

A 'failed install' could be something as simple as you shutting down the PC without realising windows update was half way through downloading the cumulative update. This is recorded as a failure, even though it's one that is of no concern.

When I do updates I don't shut down. I'm just trying to get 1607 and it fails and doesn't even show in the failed updates. It's the only update I get that's pending.

No, you ARE on the latest build - the latest build for version 1511 that is. You have all the same security/bug fixes from the latest cumulative update as you would have on 1607. These cumulative updates are issued simultaneously for all three versions of windows 10.

What you don't have are the latest features that come with 1607, the lack of the Anniversary Update does not make your system any less secure or stable.

If you go into Settings > Update & security then manually check for updates do you see the upgrade to 1607 listed? It will be called:
'Features update to Windows 10, version 1607'

Can you confirm that it says the pending update is the 'Features update to Windows 10, version 1607'? If so, this is a large update, some 3-4GB, and can take a long time (days sometimes) to complete the download. It is the complete install files for a new version of Windows, unlike the other updates that are only patches for the existing version.

Yes, that is what the update says 'Features update to Windows 10, version 1607'. It apparently downloads but won't install.

Windows Update does seem to get stuck sometimes trying to install an upgrade like the Anniversary Update (1607). A more reliable way to upgrade to 1607 is to download the install media and do the upgrade yourself. You can use Microsoft's Media Creation Tool to make the install media, either as a .iso file of as a USB. https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/...-download.html

If you make the USB you start the upgrade by running Setup on the USB from within Windows. If you make the .iso file you can mount this by double-clicking on it within File Explorer then run Setup from the virtual drive. Either way, it should take about an hour to upgrade and will need some 20GB or so free space before you start.

I'll have to try that over the weekend. I went through hell trying to get the Win10 upgrade from Win 7 but that was several months ago and it may have been how I finally did it. I'll have to do a backup and hope I don't lose my OS as I have it now considering it was the free upgrade. That's my biggest concern, losing 10 altogether.

You won't lose W10. When it was activated during the W7 upgrade MS recorded the activation code on its servers and if you re-install W10 on the same system it will check its servers and activate again.

If you can't get it to update you can download the latest W10 ISO and do a clean install and it will activate. One of my systems would not update to 1511 so I just did a clean install and its been doing great.

Making a system image first is always a good idea. I used one to make a copy of my original OEM Win7 HDD before taking the free upgrade.

As @Phone Man says, a digital licence tied to your hardware and was recorded by Microsoft. A clean install will activate automatically. 'Hardware' for this purpose doesn't include the hard drive. For the Anniversary Update, before upgrading my system first I swapped out my HDD for a spare one and did a test clean install of 1607 on that. It activated within minutes.

I just tried installing Win 10 from the ISO image created on a DVD. I got to 47% and then...

A program caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

Typical of Microsoft. Their tech wizards never make things easy. It's why I stuck with Win 7 even though MS made it impossible to get updates. I tried installing again with no other drives installed but the C drive, same message and same failure. Here we go again, thanks Microsoft!
