Windows 10: Win 10 1903 -> 1909 upgrade strangeness...

Hi Guys,

I'm usually the sort of person that watches and waits when a new upgrade comes out, but this time I went for it as soon as 1909 became available. I currently have/had three PCs running Windows 10 1903...

Yesterday I upgraded two of the three PCs (both running Win 10 Pro 64-bit 1903), by downloading the 1909 Media Creation Tool (MCT) and running it on each machine, selecting the "Upgrade this PC now" option.

All went well and after a few reboots, and around 30 minutes later, both systems are running fine (aside from a few required tweaks to the fonts sizes, and various explorer "View" settings).

This morning I thought I'd also upgrade the third PC. Prior to the upgrade I manually ran Windows Update and lo and behold, the "Feature update to Windows 10, version 1909" was present, so rather than using the MCT, I thought I'd let Windows Update handle the upgrade. It was all complete in about 5 minutes, which left me scratching my head a bit - why does the MCT upgrade take so long?

I also looked at the disk usage on all three systems after the upgrade to 1909...

On the two I upgraded via the MCT, the disk usage had actually dropped approximately 23GB (1903) to 17GB (1909) - not sure where the extra 6GB has gone!

On the other system that upgraded to 1909 via Windows Update, the disk usage hadn't changed - still at 23GB.

I checked the current version of Windows 10 on all three systems and they all show 1909, with OS Build 18363.476

My question is, why does the MCT upgrade take so long and why does it free up and extra 6GB of disk space?

Any extra curiosity is that I'm currently (as I type) running the MCT upgrade on the third PC (even though it's supposed already upgraded) and it never complained that the system is already running 1909 / 18363.476.... Go figure...

How to upgrade Windows 10 1903 to 1909?

Hi,

I am a test engineer, I have to upgrade my current test Win10 1903 OS to 1909 OS. I tried updating the SSU KB4525419 and LCU KB4522355 by referring WiKipedia(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_10_version_history#Version_1909_(November_2019_Update),
But still the OS remains 1903. Please help me to find the way to upgrade to 1909.

I am also doubting that there is no information mentioned in above KBs about 1909 upgrade. Am I doing right way? or Should I follow any other way of approach?

While there is no official release date, it is expected that version 1909, will be released approx. on Patch Tuesday in October (2nd Tuesday of October)

If you are already running, that will be downloaded automatically as a cumulative update to version 1903, rather than as a full Feature Update . . .

Otherwise, the release of 1909 will be similar to the 1903 release, it will be a stepped release to compatible devices first . . .etc.
