Every time you change setting in the Gpedit.msc for example enable other microsoft updates it doesn't take effect until you run the service AKA - Check for updates , after you change Gpedit.msc and then check update the setting will take effect. might need to disable or re enable it one time and check for update then it will work like before. from what I have checked just couple min now.

Got the 2nd Tuesday updates. On the system with the GP Edit settings, I was notified that updates were available. I clicked "Check for updates" and they came down. On the desktop (which now has the Anniversary Update installed), I received no notification that updates were available. When I finally clicked "Check for updates", all the updates came rolling down. I wish they would have some indicator on the Windows Update screen showing what your settings are.

I implemented the GPEDIT.MSC settings yesterday 8/16 (on a Surface3 running Win10pro) but had not done the "Check for updates" so the anniversary update installed and now these edits don't seem to function as the Settings/windows update dialog only shows "Available updates will be downloaded and installed automatically...". I haven't tried the Metered WIFI as this workaround is not desirable. I would expect and hope that someone identifies a new method that provides user control over updates.

  5. Just wondering, why do you find it undesirable? I use it on Ethernet.
Though it is true, that it prevents Defender from downloading updates.

I would prefer a notification with a list of updates that I can review and deselect those which may impact my work. I usually review others comments regarding updates to evaluate any impact on applications that I'm using. The Metered updates seems just the same as disabling updates. I can understand MS desire to force updates but they should be listening to customers and provide the options that have existed in the past.

  7. True, that is why I use Windows Update MiniTool to download updates. Way more effective.

I can confirm that this setting works, at least on windows 10 enterprise anniversary, even though it says that downloads will be installed automatically.
