    Win 10 question

Okay, I hate Win 8 and absolutely refused to use it. To me Win 10 is hardly much better. First of all I'm not 20 years old anymore and don't give a darn about all these apps of which 98% are pointed toward kids. And where's the desktop with my programs? That's what I want to see. Get rid of all those useless apps on the right side of the screen and put my desktop there and I might be interested. As far as what I've seen, most apps are just out to sell you something you don't want anyway. I need that like a hole in my head. I already know what I want and how to get it. With Win 8 I tried to find how to put Notepad on my homescreen. That was a waste of time. Obviously what is important to me and I'm sure many others is not the least bit important to Microsoft. I'll stick with Win 7 for as long as it lasts.

    :)

Settings Icon Appeared Then Disappeared on Desktop By Itself

Windows 10 Pro / A settings icon appeared on my desktop all by itself last night. When I clicked on it, it was a list like in previous versions of Windows. It even let me choose sized in upper right corner. This morning 8-16-2015 the settings icon on desktop
    is gone all by itself.

You dont have to use those apps, they're not compulsory. Windows 10 doesn't go into some app landscape any more its more like Windows 7. It has a start menu and you can remove the apps from that as well. If you didnt like Windows 8 because of that then you should feel more at home with Windows 10.

Windows 10 does perform a lot better than Windows 7 so I think once you've removed the apps, you'll begin to appreciate it.

It sounds like you have your Start menu set to full screen, and set to show after sign in.

You can set Start to show normally or full screen.

You can turn off showing Start after sign in.

I have no problem with trying it, I just worry about being able to go back to Win 7 if so desired. Without problems. Let's see how easy it is to put note pad on the desktop. With Win 8 I found a Microsoft post on how to do it. It was 12 steps long. I lost them at step 7 because the page they were looking at was different then what I was. Different version of WIn 7? What got me the most was it took twelve step to explain it. Doing the same in 7 took 3 or 4 steps. I'll wait till I see some independent reviews before I decide. To listen to MSoft, Windows Vista and Win 8 were monuments to technical perfection.

    Win 10 question

Put note pad on desktop ,or any app for that matter ,, right click on desktop , click on new ,click on shortcut , type in notepad.exe ,click yes to notepad for the name ,,its there that easy.

and if you want a easy way to shutdown the computer , do the same ,created new shortcut ,, type in ,,, slidetoshutdown.exe ,, save it ,then if you want to change its icon ,right click the new shortcut ,go properties ,change icon , I use the nice red box with the white line in it . you can use what ever one you want .. then just click that to shutdown ,it will go half screen ,then just click the half screen or hit enter on the keyboard

Here's how you do that in Windows 8.

    Open Start Menu.
    Type "Notepad"
Right Click on Notepad Icon, choose Open File Location.
Ctrl-Drag icon to desktop from explorer window that opens from previous step.
Alternatively, you could right click the icon and choose copy, then right click on the desktop and choose paste (or ctrl-c/ctrl-v).

Either way it's 4 steps if you count opening start menu and typing notepad as two separate steps, otherwise it's 3.

    In Windows 10:

You can do it the exact same way as in Windows 8, or

Open Start Menu, and navigate to the Notepad icon in All Apps menu.
Click and drag notepad icon from start menu to desktop, it creates a link automatically.

  10. 1) Search for the program notepad ext:exe in the explorer search box
    2) Right click notepad.exe in the search results and then
select create shortcut from the context menu

Depending on where the program is located, the create shortcut might say something along these lines
"You can't create a shortcut here, do you want to create it on the desktop" - which is what you want anyway.
    or ....
the shortcut might be created in that location, then all you have to do is drag it to the desktop

    3 steps max.

Wow, fixed with a notepad shortcut on the desktop!

There are literally so many different ways to do this.. and I can't think of a single one of them that requires 12 steps to accomplish unless you are deliberately sightseeing.

And, 95% of these techniques are identical to how you would do them in earlier versions of Windows going back (in some cases) to Windows 95.

Another option you have for a classical feel if you do decide to upgrade to Windows 10 (which you could have done with Windows 8/8.1) there is an app for free called CLASSIC SHELL that you can download and it will literally let you customize your start menu/button to Windows 98 style, Windows XP, Windows 7, depending on the layout and feel you want.

Or if your not really savvy and just want to install a program and have it take over for you, google START8 which is a start menu just like Windows 7 but made for Windows 8 and 10 (when 10 goes RTM). Start8 requires no tweaking, super user friendly and is 30 days free to use, after that its $4.99 for the program for lifetime license. You will get your Windows 7 style start menu whilst running Windows 10.

There are options available. And those tiles, you can right-click and either uninstall as many as you can or Windows will allow or just unpin them from the start menu.
