Windows 10: Win 10 Task Manager now only works in Admin mode

Starting with Windows 8 (and Windows 10) all standard users are not allowed to run Task Manager without elevating the process or logging in as an administrator.

If you're using the default UAC settings and logged in as an administrator then Task Manager is silently elevated... That's why you're able to start Task Manager and view details but it won't work for Standard users.

Here are two methods standard users can use to start Task Manager without elevation (or administrator access).

#1: Use a 3rd party Task Manager such as Process Explorer or Process Hacker.
#2: Using this workaround:

• 1: Open a command prompt
• 2: Type "set __compat_layer=runasinvoker" (without the quotes) and hit enter.
• 3: Type "taskmgr.exe" and hit enter.

The first option is easy, just download the ZIP and run the executable... The second option forces Task Manager to run as the standard user and without elevation or administrator access - It's a handy trick you can use to run anything (for example regedit or task manager) that requires administrator rights (or elevation) when you don't have administrator access *Wink

 

That picture above is from standard user account with all default settings. I can see all (almost) details from processes etc.
What standard user can't do is run elevated tasks (without providing administrator password) and see which process is elevated.

OP question wasn't how to run Task Manager elevated, but how to see some details in it. If I remember correctly (have to check back *Smile)
