Because computer issues are particular to a system, no one can tell you what the ideal course of action is.

The tech has an opinion that is similar to mine. There is no rush to get Windows 10. Everything a person uses their OS for can be done already on whatever OS they're using. There are 2 major service patches coming for Windows 10 - one in August, and then another in October. Before these two patches are released, people will be encountering the brunt of Windows 10 errors.

If you're a person who expects, or desires to run an OS knowing that there will be no issues, then waiting sounds like a good idea.

For me, since I guess Windows 7, an OS should be stable by definition, and a stable OS should not be put aside for one that's still getting its issues ironed out. My perspective is that even though Microsoft have made the official release of Windows 10 on July 29th, that the real presentation of the OS will not be until October, when the second service patch (SR2) releases.

There's more than just bug fixes that will come in the time between now and October. New features that have already been announced for Windows 10 will release in SR1 and SR2. Those new features may bring new bugs of their own. ~3 months of mass public use will also give Microsoft a lot of feedback on hidden issues, and things that don't work as easily as they can, and a lot of minor adjustments might be made between now and October.

After using the Preview build for a month, I feel like Windows 10 is still in a late beta stage, and that these next 2 - 3 months will be the time it needs to be a confidently stable OS.

I agree with your tech, that waiting is a good philosophy in the case of Windows 10. It isn't an ambiguous suggestion - we know what's going on with Windows 10 in the next few months, and we know that there will be big stability and feature differences between now and SR2's release.

As the foundation truly isn't all there yet, I feel that Windows 10 really starts with SR2, and that the current release is for marketing, and accounting purposes.

you obviously haven't been following the statements from Microsoft; there isnt going to be a "SR1 or a SR2 or a SR4...windows is now a service, with ongoing updates, fixes, and modifications, and these will be made on a regular basis, with no "service packs" being released...when something is discovered to be an issue, a fix goes out immediately, not held back for a service pack.
and you couldn't be more wrong with your observation about this version not being "Stable"..I have beta tested for Microsoft for over 20 years, starting with win 95, and this is BY FAR, the most tested, most stable "official" version for windows EVER, so if you or anyone else has major issues after installing this, its either operator error, or faulty hardware, or poor 3rd party hardware/software/drivers. To say anything else is just inaccurate..

Five million people were in the insider program, testing and reporting issues so, if you think that's not an incredibly large, reliable, testing base, I dont know what is!

Windows 10 'Service Release 1' expected to roll out next month

Win 10's release being the most stable official release doesn't mean it is as stable as other Windows OS' are at this moment. If you don't keep your comments contextual, then they don't convey any truthful meaning.

Please don't be silly. Someone with over 20 years of in-depth computer experience knows that the above statement is flawed on multiple levels.

Including me, so I know that there are still many bugs.

Hey, how am I supposed to accept or reject advice when you are all disagreeing on sp 1 or sp 2 and everything in between? As was stated, every pc is different. I would image the more modern machines will take this upgrade easier than older ones. I am not so sure 5m people testing a major upgrade is all that many when you think the population of my country alone is around the 77m mark.

I seek advice, not arguments, please?

  6. It sounds like your concern is being able to use your PC comfortably, and not anything that is dependent upon some particular Windows 10 feature. Upgrading will involve an uncertain element - you could have upgrade issues, usability issues, or driver / app incompatibility issues. Those things will be less prevalent after a few months of mainstream public use and patches.

You won't miss anything by waiting a few months, and your first engagement with the OS will be all the smoother for it. I recommend waiting. Then you know you have a good and solid OS now, and that you'll have a pretty solid OS in a few months.

Also, look at some review videos, and see whether the visual design is something that you like or not.

  7. I think you got good advice from your tech. Unless you need Windows 10 let your tech install it whenever.

  9. Any Forum is going to present multiple, different points of view -- some of them even conflicting. If you're looking for consistence or a consensus, a Forum is not the place to go.

That said ... my advice is to wait before upgrading.

The free upgrade is good for a LONG time -- there is no necessity to rush into it right now. There's already been information released about a 1GB "update" that is applied after the Upgrade -- with lots of fixes. And, there's new information (now) about the SR1 coming out in a few weeks.

I just need a tool to go through and give full access to admin accts on all hard drives, I don't know WTH took place on my upgrade but a lot of access denied stuff happened. [Went from 7 Ultimate to 10 Pro]

I disabled Windows Defender, One Drive, etc.

My F: drive, I went through it completely and added my User (only account) that is admin as it's own full access entity, and for F: any way I think that fixed it. (will do rest of the partitions if needed). Went through each and every file giving MY ACCOUNT ownership and full access, felt really ridiculous having to do that, but it fixed it. [gpedit.msc is a good friend]

To a non-expert Windows user, I can see some major hair pulling and screaming at tech support.

Wouldn't want that job right now.

After all the file stuff is over, I like 10, some stuff is considerably smoother, I feel like Windows caught up to my PC capabilities SOME this time.

I am a bit puzzled though atm, if I PIN to START off right click, it's not always PINNING TO START. [Icons on desktop or elsewhere]

  12. I glanced over the thread, but it seems like the tech you were dealing with is like the people in my company...afraid of anything new.

The people who have issues upgrading to Windows 10 are a very very small percentage. There's no need to wait until some update or roll up pack to be released. If you want 10 and you have a somewhat recent computer, go for it. It's a simple upgrade that even some very non-tech members of my family have been able to perform without any assistance.

Then, when finished, stop going to that tech and find someone knowledgeable.

I have actually gone down 'the tubes' to a friends pc and fixed it. Nothing major but it was sorted. The tech guy I used was for a problerm with software in win 8.1 and Windows Media Center, which is unavailable in 10. Great, after I bought it, only cheap!! He came down to do something or other and installed WMC too. Anyway, now on 10, easy install, and although 10 is not brilliant, its good. Read a mag which said win 10 was not as stable as Vista, and he added, I never expected to say that!!

Win 10 does need some fixes but overall I'd score it 85/100 to date.

I am going to another friends pc soon via 'teamviewer' to have a look at his.

  14. I'm curious as to what magazine compared Windows 10 to Vista. Seems like a biased comparison with the outcome decided before the actual comparison. Vista was actually very stable, but the 3rd party support wasn't there. Nvidia, for example, didn't have stable drivers available for a while after Vista's release. Windows 10 is also very stable, and has much better 3rd party support. Not all companies have been ready, but it's on them, as Microsoft did an incredible job of making the beta versions available for these companies to be ready. Besides, it's free, so there's nothing to lose in trying it out.

I ran it virtually for most of the Insider testing, and ran it natively upon it's release and haven't looked back.
