Windows 10: Win 10 updates

Hi All
New to forum so be gentle! Reasonably tech savvy, but stuck on this one.
Upated successfully up to 11/11. but from 9/12 all updates after " Security update for flash player..... KB 3119147 has failed. screen shows updating but nothing is downloaded.
As an aside, and I'm not sure about relevance, If i request restart the system hangs. Showing "restarting do not turn off" but with no activity on drive. It will hang for an hour and will not restart without cold boot.

Any ideas?

Settings Icon Appeared Then Disappeared on Desktop By Itself

Windows 10 Pro / A settings icon appeared on my desktop all by itself last night. When I clicked on it, it was a list like in previous versions of Windows. It even let me choose sized in upper right corner. This morning 8-16-2015 the settings icon on desktop
is gone all by itself.

 

Hi, have you tried turning off fast startup?
Sudden thought.. you may have a pending or failed update.. too late to look this up just now for me.

Of course you can go down the
Open an elevated command prompt and run:
Chkdsk C: /F
SFC /Scannow
DISM commands
....... route.

(For now I'll assume you know how to do that- these are well documented in many places).

I'd certainly suggest chkdsk just as a preliminary and precautionary step.

Then try an in place upgrade repair install.

This does tend to fix a lot of obscure problems, and retains everything, except system restore is turned off afterwards and you might notice a couple of other easily correctable minor side effects.

All the above assumes you don't have appropriate disk images you can restore (Most highly recommended as virtually essential to support fragile Windows) - e.g. Aomei Backupper, Macrium Reflect (both free) + boot disk + external storage for the images which also act as full backups for your OS, data, disk/partitions.

Someone else may suggest another approach...
