Yeah, I will have to try that, just don't want to remove my other options on my file menu. Would rather ADD that option then remove WinRAR options. But yes I will play with that method too. *Smile

    Hi,

Quite likely WinRAR did as it can be a bit "possessive" when it comes to file associations.
You can change that I suppose by re-running the setup and unchecking some of the file associations or you may be able to return to Windows defaults through "Settings" > Apps> Defaults. Or else as Porthos suggests by using the "Open With" menu in Explorer.

To mount an ISO file as a Virtual Drive - just double click the ISO files.. (with win8 Host OS or above)

Porthos was correct on his method, as I have already read about this method. It will work, and is a quick and easy method. Will take a look just to see what it may change in my file menu's.

Not if winrar ,winzip or 7zip takes over iso handling.

    Hi,

Sure. I recall us having discussed this briefly before. Since you then mentioned you couldn't access the "Open with" menu option I thought I'd mention different workarounds. *Cool
There are various software solutions as well from the days Windows didn't have the possibility to mount an iso file directly but it seems a bit over the top nowadays.

Does not change anything its just there for you to use. Many have those programs installed and that is where people get confused with mounting instructions.

That is not how you MOUNT an ISO file...
That is how you EXTRACT an ISO file..

    Wording is everything..

To get back to Windows default association with ISO image. This will allow you to Mount either "Double Click" as mentioned above by KYHI or right click->Mount. Open File Explorer, you'll see the ISO is mounted to a virtual CD.

    • Right click on the ISO File 1
    • Select Windows Explorer ie. 2
    • check mark on 3
    • OK on 4.

This also will remove any association with WinRaR, 7-zip, Ultra ISO etc...

To Extract from ISO file, right click on it then select either WinRaR or 7-Zip or WinZip->Extract Files, select the destination where you want to extract it to. For example: to a USB stick so you can boot it from.

May I ask; after downloading the ISO .WIM from TechBench I right clicked on the file and selected burn after checking verify .

Is my disc OK to install and repair?? Without getting into mounting??

Yep, as long as, by "repair", you simpy mean doing an in-place upgrade.

By repair I mean using the latest and all DISM commands to fix corrupted files that SFC and DISM health cannot fix.

With .ESD it cannot find the source but with .WIM the source can be located.

Right. As mentioned earlier, I didn't have much luck for some unknown reason using the .WIM DVD as the specified source for DISM. I had better luck mounting the .iso file and specifying that drive as the source.

Obviously, YMMV. Give it a try and see if it works OK for you.

P.S. [2 hours later] - That failure of a Tech Bench burned DVD for DISM was on my wife's laptop. I just now gave it a try on my own laptop (per "System specs") and it worked fine as /source:wim for /RestoreHealth in DISM - no need in that case for me to mount the .iso file.

    Hi,

Yes but in that case you have to mount the iso file first then adjust the path parameters for the DISM command so it points to the virtual drive letter %\sources dir.
