Win 11 voice typing not recognising microphone

When I press win key + H to start voice typing the mic box comes up but with a message saying "make sure the mic is on and try again" but the mic is on. In Settings-system-sound-properties the mic is working OK, I can do a test and replay it.I have tried loads of web sites but they all go through the same list of possible problems but non seem to be relevant to my PC.So wondered if anyone might have an idea about what is going on.

  2. External Microphone not recognised

    Hi

    Welcome to Microsoft community.

If your external microphone is not being recognized by your laptop, there are several troubleshooting steps you can follow to resolve the issue. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you get your external microphone working on your MSI Katana GF66 laptop running Windows 11:

    1. Check Connections:
      • Ensure that the microphone is properly connected to your laptop using both the USB power cable and the 3.5mm audio cable.
      • Try different USB and audio ports to rule out any issues with specific ports.
    2. Driver Installation:
      • Make sure you have the necessary drivers installed for the external microphone. Sometimes, devices require specific drivers to function properly. You can typically find these drivers on the manufacturer's website.
    3. Device Manager:
      • Open Device Manager by right-clicking on the Start button and selecting "Device Manager."
      • Look for any entries related to your external microphone. It should appear under "Audio inputs and outputs."
      • If you see the microphone listed, make sure it's enabled and up to date. You can right-click on it and choose "Enable" or "Update driver."
    4. Sound Settings:
      • Right-click on the speaker icon in the taskbar and select "Open Sound settings."
      • Under the "Input" section, make sure the external microphone is selected as the default recording device.
    5. Privacy Settings:
      • In Windows 11, privacy settings can sometimes affect microphone access. Go to Settings > Privacy > Microphone and ensure that apps have permission to use the microphone.
    6. Troubleshoot Sound Problems:
      • Windows has a built-in troubleshooter that can help diagnose and fix audio-related issues. Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot, and select "Playing Audio" and "Recording Audio" troubleshooters.
    7. Test on Another PC:
      • Since the microphone works on another laptop, try it on a different computer again to confirm that it's not a hardware issue with the microphone.
    8. Reinstall Drivers:
      • If none of the above steps work, you may want to uninstall the drivers for your external microphone in Device Manager and then plug it back in to let Windows reinstall the drivers.
Please let me know if you need any further assistance. Thank you.

  3. Windows 11 dictation feature (Win + H) fails to consistently recognise "comma" command.

    Hi

    Welcome to Microsoft community.

I understand the trouble you're experiencing with the Windows 11 dictation feature. It must be incredibly frustrating, especially since the tool is so essential for your work. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:

    Improve Microphone Settings

Ensure your microphone is set up correctly and optimally for dictation.

    1. Adjust Microphone Settings:
      • Right-click the Sound icon in the taskbar and select Sound settings.
      • Under Input, select your microphone and click Device properties.
      • Adjust the Volume and make sure the Input sensitivity is appropriate.
    2. Use Microphone Setup Wizard:
      • Go to Settings > System > Sound.
      • Under Input, select Manage sound devices, then select your microphone and click Configure.
      • Follow the steps to calibrate your microphone.
    Train Speech Recognition

The Voice Typing tool can benefit from training to better understand your voice and pronunciation.

    1. Open Speech Recognition:
      • Press Win + R, type control, and press Enter to open the Control Panel.
      • Go to Ease of Access > Speech Recognition.
    2. Train Your Computer:
      • Click Train your computer to better understand you and follow the prompts.
    Use Alternative Phrases

Sometimes, using alternative phrases can help with recognition.

    1. Try saying "insert comma" or "add comma" instead of just "comma".
    Check for Background Noise

Ensure there is minimal background noise, as this can interfere with voice recognition accuracy.

    1. Reduce Background Noise:
      • Use a noise-canceling microphone if possible.
      • Ensure you're in a quiet environment when dictating.
    Provide Feedback to Microsoft

If the issue persists, providing feedback to Microsoft can help them improve the feature.

    1. Send Feedback:
      • Press Win + F to open the Feedback Hub.
      • Describe your issue in detail and submit it. Microsoft uses this feedback to improve their products.
      • Microsoft attaches great importance to user experience, you can submit your ideas and suggestions through the Feedback Hub, and the development team will regularly review submissions for ideas or fixes.

Please share the feedback link here after submitting as it will allow others on the forum to vote for your submission, including me. More votes will lead to more visibility and higher priority to the development team.

It's understandable that such a crucial tool not working correctly can be very frustrating, especially when it disrupts your workflow. You're not alone in facing these issues, and many users have shared similar experiences. Remember, providing feedback to Microsoft can help improve the tool for everyone. In the meantime, trying these steps might alleviate some of the difficulties you're encountering. Hang in there, and hopefully, a more permanent solution will be found soon.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

Issue with Voice Typing Language Change on Windows 11

    Hi

    Welcome to Microsoft community.

If you're encountering issues with switching the voice typing language between Korean and English on your Windows 11 system, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you:

    Check Your Installed Language Packs

First, ensure that both the English and Korean language packs are correctly installed on your system.

    • Go to Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
    • Check if both English and Korean are listed under Preferred languages. If not, click on Add a language to add the missing language pack.
    Verify the Speech Language Settings

Windows 11 voice typing feature relies on the speech language settings to determine which language it should recognize.

    • Navigate to Settings > Time & language > Speech.
    • Under Manage voices, make sure you have the voices for both English and Korean installed. If a voice is missing, you can download it by clicking on Add voices.
    • Also, check the Windows display language and Preferred languages settings to ensure they are correctly set for your multilingual needs.
Use the Windows Key + H Shortcut

When you want to switch between languages for voice typing:

    • First, ensure the correct language keyboard is selected. You can switch between keyboards by clicking on the language icon in the taskbar or by using the Windows key + Spacebar shortcut.
    • Once the correct keyboard is selected, use the Windows key + H shortcut to activate voice typing. The voice typing should correspond to the keyboard language currently selected.
    Check for Updates

Make sure your Windows 11 is up to date, as Microsoft frequently releases updates that can fix known issues and improve overall functionality:

    • Go to Settings > Windows Update and click on Check for updates.
    Troubleshoot the Speech Recognition Feature

If you're still having issues, using the built-in troubleshooter might help identify and fix problems related to speech recognition:

    • Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
    • Run the Speech troubleshooter and follow any recommendations it provides.
    Reset Language Settings

As a last resort, you can try resetting your language settings, which might help resolve any conflicts:

    • Navigate to Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
    • Use the Reset option to reset your language settings to their default values. Note that this might remove any custom language settings, so use it as a last resort.
If after following these steps you still cannot switch the voice typing to English, there might be a more specific issue with your Windows 11 installation. In such cases, contacting Microsoft Support for more direct assistance might be beneficial. They can offer more tailored support.

Please feel free to let me know how it goes.
