    All these ridiculous scare stories!

For example users of Cortana divulging their locality and other details, if you don't wish take advantage of its facilities don't use it, its as simple as that.

As for intrusion by Microsoft, is anyone conceited enough to believe out of the billions of users they have either the time or the inclination to pick on them.

I'm familiar with the Microsoft Partner program. It's just that I didn't know it grew to that size. It's huge! I should've researched before making any statement. *Redface

As you probably know, it is a stringent program and there are different levels of partners. Not exactly sure, but I would think that not all of the 640,000 partners would have access to the data. Hoping that it is just a select, trusted few.

    @ Slartybart

    I don't Google > I Bing. *Wink

As a side note > I don't have my tower set up yet after my recent move, but I'm hoping Cortana performs this on the 10 tower PC edition as it has on the mobile edition. I think it to be a great feature.

Windows Phone 8 and 8.1 Search Button

Perhaps someone will experiment this and post the results?

Once again this subject has caused quite a stir amongst members, although I'm quite sure that was not your intention. All in all the end result is that everyone gets educated on it. I feel this should be our foremost goal as members.

    Post 3 ... page 3 - at least I got 3 correct *Wink
I was too lazy to go find the unofficial rules and look it up.
Thanks for posting the link... it's one of the greatest hits in my book

    No sweat Hippsie,

Yep, there are levels to the Partner program. The top tier complain that there are too many partners that cut doen on the opportunities (not enough to share?)

    So you're a Binger - that's ok *Wink

You're correct, I saw something during an install and thought "Hey, that's worded differently". Posted a thread with background links and ..... the thread went off to the races.

Professionals will advise you to opt-out. Microsoft provides an easy way to opt-out of their own marketing and for opting out from other marketing. The link is buried in with the other resources in my thread post, but it worth looking at the options.
    Microsoft personalized ad preferences

hmmmm... I though The link above had a reference to this page:
Consumer Opt-out | NAI: Network Advertising Initiative
Note1: these opt-outs only remove personalized ads based on site visits, searches, etc. - you will still get ads.
Note2: these are cookie based opt-outs, if you clean out cookies - the opt-out is lost. Newer technologies exist and are being implemented to target advertising specific to a user.

You might have to be signed in to a MS account to get there from the MS page - not sure.

There's a plethora of information on Microsoft's site: Your Privacy Is Our Priority

There are really only two stances on privacy
    1) I am concerned about privacy
    2) I am not concerned about privacy

You can probably guess that I fall into the first category. I don't think there's a "I'm sort of concerned about privacy" - that's akin to sort of being pregnant.

I'm with you on this: All in all the end result is that everyone gets educated on it. I feel this should be our foremost goal as members. I'll add It's up to each individual to decide what to do with the information. I take the same approach to helping other members solve issues - if they don't implement my suggestion - that's ok.

and that's why my dissertation posts are sooooo long - you'll find the answer in there somewhere, but you pay the price of getting some information about the issue.

If one took note of all the posts by members obsessed by revealing their personal details, psychiatrists should be having a field day.

Do you have an anti-virus programme installed, they have complete access to everything on your computer, yes even M$ Defender.

Why worry yourself sick and accept that the only people truly interested in you are hopefully your close family, so keep taking the tranquilisers,

If you wish to use a computer it makes no difference whether you use an M$, Apple or Linux O/S.

I am no expert on anti-virus, but just asking > "complete access" ... really?
Don't AV programs scan data bits at a very low level?
Last scan on this system was something like 73000 in 30 seconds !

Doesn't matter what build, if remote access is turned off, what permission does a ghost have?
Aren't file permissions restricted to authorized use only?

  12. Another mischaracterization of the thread. This was one setting, only one. How you extrapolated the rest is beyond me. I suppose it could have been the supporting background information that led you to believe otherwise. Fair enough.

There's no obsession - it's awareness. I'm not worried, I turn these things off - is it 100% nope, but it's the best I can do without going to live in a cave.

I am concerned that many people don't even think about privacy. Too many people either don't know enough,, or perhaps like yourself have given up all hope.

Bill, there are many, many folks monitoring these forums hoping to pick up information they need, but too timid to show their lack of knowledge by asking questions.

What you've done is to open the eyes of those who wish to learn to the actual truth of things. It's too bad that some have poo poo'd the information you've given. In the long run, they'll be the losers.

I will take what you've shared and use it as I see fit; I suggest everyone else do the same and stop trying to kill the messenger!

Your problem is you assume... I Quote:- or perhaps like yourself have given up all hope.

I am wise enough to know that posting personal details on websites such as Facebook is certainly unwise, but then there are two types of privacy intrusion (do read my above link) the other being Malware, which might prove a balanced viewpoint on my part.

As long as you don't click on dodgy links such as in e-mail and use common sense elsewhere on the web you should be reasonably safe apart from unavoidable advertising malware.

Regarding Microsoft do read my posts #14 and #50 again

Finally back to my original statement, Your problem is you assume too much and are dogged by groundless fears.

  15. Thanks Wynona,

I'm not concerned by those who are not concerned about privacy. It is a difficult thing and far too many legal documents with all the funny speak (may. might, could....)

There are only two arguable positions, the rest is just noise.
    1) You are concerned about privacy enough to know your options
    2) You are not concerned about privacy

There have been 3, almost 4, generations brought up being fed the marketing pablum - Trust us. I trust 'em all right. I trust them to keep trying to get me to buy that new thingagig or another thingagig in a different color. There are a lot of 'them' trying to get me to buy something.

If the Mickey Marketeer club paid me for my information, I might consider letting them use it. But they pay other companies for your information. About 20 years ago, your information was worth $700.00 (so was mine *Wink)

As far as shooting the messenger ... I'm not dead yet *Wink
