Windows 10: Win10 Anniversary Update Woes

Updated yesterday to Anniversary Update. My PC worked AoK for about an hour and then the Desktop stopped working. The mouse pointer still moved around, but will not activate the start menu, or any applications. Resorted to a hard re-boot. After that, Win-AU would work for 15 seconds before going cold again (start menu + keyboard unresponsive, mouse pointer moves open windows but will not activate icons).

So I reverted to the previous version and so far so good. Any one else have this problem?

When I choose the end button, the desktop goes black.

You might have a program installed/running that is incompatible with the anniversary upgrade. Some have been noted, e.g.
Daemon Tools
Aeroglass 1.4.5
7+taskbar
One person found an issue with PowerISO v6's context menu
etc.. - but those didn't give rise to your symptoms specifically.

You might have been able to find a clue from the event log e.g. by booting into safe mode (and it would have been interesting to know if safe mode worked ok).

After that I'd have tried a clean boot I guess.

 

I have Win10 Pro, version 10.0.10586 Build 10586 and have now tried 4 times to install the Anniversary Update. I even tried to update with my Norton Anti-Virus inactive (I sure hated to do that). The symptoms are that I search for updates, am prompted to update, after it downloads, it takes about 1/2 hour to install the update and return me to where I can login again. When I look at msinfo, it does not reflect the new version number.

I am anxious to use the new Ubuntu distribution.

Any clues as to what I can try to do next?

Unless I'm reading this wrong, you are trying to install via normal Windows Update where you 'Check for Updates', let it download and install and restart ? If you have a decent connection, go to this Microsoft page and download a clean copy of the entire, latest ISO; match your edition, language and choose 32 or 64 bit & Save to desktop - Windows 10 ISO

When download is finished, disable your antivirus (never enable installing from media, I even uninstall first), R-click the ISO and click 'Mount'. This will open it as a virtual drive. Click setup.exe in the folder and run the Upgrade. It will check your PC for conflicts, then enough space and ask you if you want to Upgrade and Keep your files and apps. Continue install unless you want to clean install.

This process is like running a Windows 10 DVD. This will write a new copy of all major files associated with Windows 10 Anniv rather than try to upgrade keeping some older files from 1511. This should take more like an hour to 1.5 hrs, not 1/2 hr like before, to get to your sign in screen where it will continue the install based on your settings. The install time is why I was skeptical of your 'upgrade' attempts. A Windows.old folder will hold your present system in case you want to rollback.

Keep a copy of this ISO so if you need to do an in-place repair, you can just remount and run. Also, the ISO is updated with cumulative updates every so often so download a new copy every once in a while. It can be burn to DVD or bootable usb in case your system does not boot which is not the case now, so creating media is not necessary.

Actually, except for the message you mention at at the end, that sounds like an intermittent problem I've had ever since upgrading to Win 10 over a year ago. (And yes, I've done a clean install. I've done two of them since the first one was definitely not clean.) During that hang, currently running applications (browsers, email, etc.) usually continue working but I cannot start new applications, I cannot shut down, most (but not all) action icons are unresponsive, etc.

If I'm patient enough - such as I go away for 30-45 minutes - everything goes back to normal.

I would consider having that error message a step forward. Maybe I'll consider getting the Anniversary Update.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my call of distress*Biggrin. Alas, even following your instructions to download the ISO, burn to a DVD, and try to install from it, have all failed. The link you provided led to an ISO for an initial install of Windows 10 and not the Anniversary Update and prompted me for a Product Key when I applied the upgrade to Windows 10 online and do not have a PK. I went to the Anniv Update page, downloaded the update file and burnt it to a DVD where I could mount it and run the setup.exe. I ran it, but, nothing changed.

I downloaded the Anniversary Update from the MS web page, Windows10Upgrade28084.exe, disabled Norton Antivirus, and ran the exe as Administrator. The update went through all the steps I'd seen before, not taking the 1.5-2.0 hours you mention. After all steps were done, still no update.

I even downloaded the Media Creation Tool thinking that it had some "magical" software for burning ISOs, but even it would not install rather exiting with an error code of 0x80072EFE-0x20000.

I'm giving up on applying the Anniv update. I updated it just fine on my HP laptop, but, I'd really like to have the Ubuntu shell on my desktop.

Thanks, but I did not tell you to burn a DVD or usb, those are only needed if you can not boot to Windows which, obviously, you can. From the link I gave you - "You can use this page to download a disc image (ISO file) that can be used to install or reinstall Windows 10. " You are essentially reinstalling and should not be asked for a product key unless you downloaded the wrong ISO (wrong edition or wrong bit). I'm assuming you need plain Windows 10 and 64 bit. The ISO on that page IS the Anniv Edition. I've put it on 8 computers now, in 2 weeks, incl 2 new ones (8.1 and 10), the rest old, some even by remote control !, using plain Windows 10 (for Home and Pro and not N or Single Language) and English (not English Intl) and all but one was 64 bit and not one failed on the first try; doing this - Windows 10 ISO

1: Select editionWindows 10 editions below are valid for both Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro /Confirm

2: Select the product language /Confirm

3: Windows 10 English /Select 32 or 64 bit

Save ISO to your desktop; when finished downloading, r-click ISO/click 'Mount'. Folder will open with ISO contents. Hit setup.exe and follow prompts. Should not get a product key request (make sure you're on line and have anti virus disable or uninstalled). If you do, hit Skip but should not appear. Allow to finish in about 1.5 hrs. Follow this and try one more time, as it seems you have no problem rolling back to working state. Good Luck

 

I downloaded the ISO file from the link you provided, Win10_1607_English_x64.iso. When I right-clicked on the file icon, there was no "Mount" option listed. I left-clicked on the file icon and it opened in WinZip. I extracted all the files locally and quit WinZip. I then disabled Norton 360 Anti-Virus, ran setup.exe, selected the options you said to and was not prompted for a Product Key. When I was asked if I wanted to check and download any updates, I said OK and some update files were downloaded. I then disconnected my Ethernet connection and the update continued until rebooting. The setup did not start automatically and I started setup.exe again doing all the same things except opting not to download any updates. The system rebooted to a login screen. When I logged in and checked the version of Windows using msinfo, nothing had changed.

The reason I had created a bootable DVD was because there was no "Mount" option and seeing as the files in the ISO seemed to indicate the ISO was bootable, I burned it to a DVD using CDBurnerXP which properly burned the ISO. I tried booting with it and running setup.exe., but, that option also failed.

I had disconnect my internet connection after the updates had been downloaded because I didn't want to leave my PC open to invaders. That was also suggested in some other remedies that I came across that it be disconnected at that point.

I don't know what to do now.
