    The tutorials provided are just a list of troubleshooting steps. Use only the steps which apply to you.

    Since none of the troubleshooting steps here worked, I'd suggest you do a Clean install.

    If that setting is already enabled, then I suggest as the next troubleshooting step might be Mozilla Safe Mode (not to be confused with Windows Safe Mode)):

    The time it takes may depend on the complexity of the program.

    Here's what you might see in the task manager while it's actively scanning:

    What do you see as you say

    - does the task manager show the process actively using CPU time if you leave it running long enough, or something else?

    Please try this diagnostic step:
    Create a new user for test purposes. Log in as that user and try the troubleshooter and report the outcome.

    - what happened a couple of days ago?

    Did you
    - install something
    - uninstall something
    - receive an update
    - make some other change?

    Do you have a System Restore point created before this started to happen that you could use?
