  1. Win10 upgrade VERY stubborn about refusing to install due to hardware

I have a Lenovo G780, it came with Windows 8 Home originally but I hated it and bought a copy of 7 Pro to install on it. That was back in early 2013.

Anyway, when MS announced the Windows 10 upgrade thing I reserved my copy, and everything went well. Now, I was finally ready to upgrade it.... but when I tried, it refused, claiming "There are no supported networking devices"

This is a mid-range 2013 laptop that came with Windows 8, the networking hardware not being supported in 10 is ridiculous (not to mention, why does that even matter? Why is there no install anyway option?) especially since it had no issues with I initially reserved it.

I have tried EVERYTHING, but nothing has worked, it is being intensely stubborn about not giving me my upgrade.

I tried re-downloading the latest (which were from 2012/2013) Ethernet and WiFi drivers and re-installing them, as well as the Intel chipset drivers.

I have tried the most common solution that is posted everywhere about uninstalling update KB3035583 then re-installing it, but it still complains about my networking hardware.

I have tried running the command "schtasks.exe /Run /TN "\Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience\Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser"" with admin rights and waiting half an hour... nothing. (Also, I am pretty sure uninstalling that update and running that task are basically the same end result, namely, making it re-evaluate your system). But it still complains about my networking hardware.

I tried forging the update by running the command "wuauclt.exe /updatenow" with admin rights to force it... but nothing happened.

Finally, I tried the Media Creation Tool to create a bootable USB drive and install off the drive.... but when I tried to do an upgrade it complained that to do an upgrade I have to install it from within Windows 7, I can't boot off the Windows 10 installer...... and guess what it complained about when I tried to run the USB stick under Windows 7?

I am seriously at my wit's end here. Nothing I can do appeases the installer's %$^@#$%^#%$ need to make my networking hardware make it feel warm and fuzzy inside, and there appears to be no way to tell it that I don't care and to install anyway.... not to mention there is no possible way the networking hardware is not compatible with 10 considering the laptop came with 8 AND it's complaining that it's not happy with either the Ethernet card OR the WiFi card. There isn't much time left to upgrade to 10 without paying for it. Any ideas or suggestions?

    :)

  2. The "change icon" bug

For anybody who hasn't seen the back-and-forth on this bug, it involved changing the icon on a desktop folder containing shortcuts to a collection of Win10 utilities. The systems to be madly in love with the Control Panel icon and absolutely refuses to
let it be changed. This bug is more than annoying; it's infuriating in its stubborn refusal to let the icon be changed.

Is anybody working fixing this thing?

hmm, have to say apart from a very stubborn voicemail icon that refuses to go away mine is okay, currently weighing up whether to debrand it with the latest firmware update but if it ain't broke...

Win10 upgrade VERY stubborn about refusing to install due to hardware

To force the upgrade from within Windows 7 you can extract the Media Creation tool ISO to the desktop and click on setup.exe. ISO - Disk Image File : Extract to the Desktop - Windows 7 Help Forums

If the upgrade doesn't work you can look at or post here the setuperr.log and setupact.log files generated to see what was wrong. It might of course fail because of the network drivers it is complaining about in which case you can uninstall them from device manager and try again.

Probably wise to make a backup before just in case.

p.s. looks like it can be made to work even though G780 isn't supported...

  5. The ISO failed too, same error. Where would I find these log files?

Most likely in the hidden directory C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther but possibly in C:\Windows or C:\Windows\Panther

  7. Hmmm, is it safe to post these? Setupact seems like it might contain a lot of sensitive information.

Have a look at the error one (setuperr.log) - it should hopefully tell you which driver or if not at what time.

You can then go to around the same time in the activity one (setupact.log) and see if you can see it there...

Worst case you can search and replace your IP address and name with xxxxxxxxx - I can't think there will be anything else too private.

Out of interest how far did it get? You double clicked on setup.exe in the folder on your desktop and then what happened?

You got the purple box and then what? Basically starting from step 7 here Windows 10 - Upgrade Installation - Windows 10 Forums where did it fail?

  9. For the ISO method, I can choose to skip or check for updates, no matter which I choose then it's about to start the install and I immediately get this:

Why would a wifi card even be REQUIRED? Much less have it complain that it doesn't like the one I have.

You could uninstall it from device manager, reboot (to make sure it is gone) and try to upgrade again. At least it is failing quickly - not after an hour or two...

I did that with my display adapter driver, installed it again after the upgrade and it worked fine.

I don't have G780 so can't be sure it will work but a quick google showed some people have managed to upgrade... Unless someone has better idea it is worth a try.

I think when he reboots the WiFi driver will be reloaded and the same error will occur. Try disabling it in BIOS Setup. Most can disable onboard LAN or WiFi.

If necessary, remove the WiFi card from the laptop, upgrade then try putting it back. If it won't work, buy a new one, they are cheap.

  12. I can't remove the card, it's pretty much a part of the motherboard.
