Windows 10: Winamp 5.8 media player now available with Windows 10 support

Winamp is officially back and the new version is now available for download. Winamp 5.8 comes with improved Windows 10 and Windows 8.1 compatibility that means the app would run flawlessly on new hardware but it still doesn’t use the native APIs.

The world’s favourite audio player Winamp was sold by AOL to Radionomy in early 2014 and the new company promised to keep the app alive. After nearly 4 years, Winamp is back with a bang.

Winamp 5.8 is not a big update but it marks the comeback of the world’s popular and famous media player. Winamp developer says that a leaked version of Winamp 5.8 recently spread over the internet and the company has officially released this version.



It is, however, worth noting that Winamp 5.8 is not an ongoing project that means it won’t get any big update but the company is working hard on a revamped Winamp experience and a mobile app.

What’s new in Winamp 5.8 for Windows?

• Support for Windows Audio (WASAPI) Output plug-in (w.i.p.) added.
• You can now completely disable Winamp’s video support and use it as a standalone audio player.
• The update has added an auto-fullscreen option to video prefs.
• Added /ENUMPLAYLISTS to the command-line support
• This update has brought support for Windows 10 and Windows 8.1.
• The OpenMPT-based Module Player has replaced the old MikMod player.
• You can use Ctrl+E editor to browse the path and edit title functions easily in Winamp.
• The scrollbars and buttons have been updated. This is change is only visible in Bento skin.
• Winamp now has a player list feature and it’s available in Bento and Modern skins.
• A bug where the URLs failed to remember after the users performed Reset history in Open URL dialog.

Hands-on with Winamp 5.8


The interface of Winamp is unchanged and Winamp is still a great player but its age is starting to show. If you’re planning to move your playlist to Winamp, there’s a built-in tool that would help you import existing iTunes playlist and you can also find a third-party plugin to migrate from Windows Media Player.



Winamp comes with a couple of skins (themes) that would change its default appearance. The standard look is busy but there are several interesting features.

Winamp runs fine on Windows 10 but doesn’t offer as many playback optimization tools as modern solutions like VLC media player.

Faulty Windows Media Player

Windows Mesdis Player developed a fault (Played jerky an missed bits) so I down loaded Media Player 10.

It's no better. Any suggestions (I run Windows 98)

 

New Windows Media Player Plugin for Firefox

Anyone who uses Windows Vista and Mozilla Firefox may be pleased to hear that the Windows Media Player team has now released a plugin for Firefox that should allow the browser to play WMP content on websites. Here are the steps to get it working:

• Installation of the Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin may require administrative access to your PC. It is recommended that you close all other open browser windows before continuing with the installation.
• Click the Install button to automatically download and install the Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin.
• Depending on your security settings, you may see a Security Warning dialog box. Click Install to install the plugin.

There is a known issue if you are using Firefox version 2.0.0.3 on Windows Vista with the installer failing with error code -203. To work around this simply restart Firefox (you will get a notification that Windows Vista will be changing the Firefox compatibility settings) and then install again - the second time should succeed.

The download is available here, and the new plugin works on all versions of Windows XP and Windows Vista (although it is mostly intended for Vista, as that currently has no WMP support in Firefox).
