I never had Display Fusion! Every fix assumes it's a startup/msconfig issue but it's not at startup! It's randomly throughout the session! I feel your pain QUOTE=IT Hertz;773498

Me too, and I have DisplayFusion. It randomly opens windows settings. The window was maximized, so I'm testing to see if it comes up after 'un' maximizing it. So far, so good.

So, I un-maximized the settings window, then closed it, and it hasn't reappeared in 2 days.

I have the same problem and DO NOT have Display Fusion installed and never have. Using Windows 10 Pro version 1511 (OS Build 10586.753).

The Windows 10 apps I've seen open in the background by themselves are XBox (never use it), OneNote (never use it), Calculator, Settings, Photos, Mahjong (will add more as I notice them).

I don't see any taskbar icon for them, they just appear in task manager. The only reason I know it keeps happening is I have an ASUS GTX 980 Ti Matrix Platinum graphics card that has a power usage level indicator that changes from greenish-blue (low) to orange (moderate) to red (high). The actual power usage percentage can be seen in the ASUS GPU Tweak II utility under "Total Power, %". When none of these Windows 10 apps are open, my graphics card power usage is at or below 10%, even with many multiple tabs open in Firefox. As soon as I open calculator or photos etc, it jumps to 34% and the power usage indicator goes from green to orange and of course the card generates a lot more heat. Any of these Windows 10 style apps cause this to happen. I update my graphics card drivers whenever a new one becomes available. This problem has been on-going for at least 6 months. It started bugging me enough to look for a fix again. If only Microsoft would do the same...

I always leave my PC on (also used as a web server) so before I go to bed, I make sure all those Windows 10 apps are closed and the power usage of my graphics card is at or below 10% and in the green. Just about every morning I wake to find calculator or settings have opened by themselves and the power usage went back up to approx 34% during the night. What an absolutely unnecessary waste of electricity! Not to mention the air conditioner running harder for longer to compensate.

Other apps that cause this unexpected instant power usage jump are Corsair Link, Dropbox, Skype, Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer 11, Google Chrome, Opera, just to name a few. I wanted to check the power supply draw using Corsair Link from my RM1000i with calculator closed and opened, but of course it uses a custom window style (power usage increases to 34%) so doesn't allow me to see the actual low level power draw.

So I searched for a max power usage in watts for my card, the closest I could find was for the generic GTX980 Ti here: GeForce GTX 980 Ti | Specifications | GeForce

Which says 250 watts. So 10% of 250 watts = 25 watts, 34% of 250 watts = 85 watts. An extra 60 watts to run calculator, seriously!?!? Just as a comparison, my real 15+ year old Casio fx-82SX calculator with heaps more features uses 0.0004 watts. Might be time to go oldskool with my Casio, certainly far cheaper with a lot less heat *Smile

Any of the older style Windows forms apps which don't use the graphics card for video acceleration or 3D graphics don't cause this at all. I've not tried writing a Windows Presentation Foundation app in C# yet but I suspect that it may be those apps causing the problem as my Windows forms apps don't. It seems to be something to do with non-Windows form applications anyway.

Windows 10 calculator is such a simple and plain flat interface, there's no good reason the power usage of my graphics card should increase by %25 whenever I open it, nor should calculator (among others) ever open on it's own.

I never maximize calculator but will try maximizing it and then restoring it down to see if the tip mentioned in the previous post has any effect. Will report back in a few days... Update: Within 15 mins calculator had opened by itself again, so that fix didn't work for me.

I'm wondering if anyone with an ASUS graphics card that has GPU Tweak can confirm this same power usage jump behavior with these apps. Or with any other graphics card where the power usage can be checked e.g. with MSI afterburner. An alternative might be one of those power draw devices that display power being used by the whole house. The idea being to measure the increased wattage and even calculate a rough cost estimate.

For those without the previously mentioned utilities, GPU-Z is a free program that will display the power usage of your graphics card as a percent as well as a lot more info: Download TechPowerUp GPU-Z | techPowerUp

My values for "Power Consumption" in the Sensors tab range from 9.0% (no calc) to 28.9% (calc open) with GPU-Z, so slightly lower than GPU Tweak II but the dramatic increase is just as visible. Just be sure to select your primary graphics card in the select box at the bottom of the GPU-Z app if you have multiple cards.

I believe this is a far more serious problem than merely reducing system resources ever so slightly. It's wasting a lot of electricity and generating unwanted heat really for no good reason at all. Whether it can be fixed in the graphics card drivers or not I don't know but Microsoft can at least start by stopping those apps opening by themselves.

For those who know how best to report Windows 10 bugs, please feel free to post this info so they can fix this ridiculous behavior asap! If Microsoft doesn't act, perhaps even notify some environmental/energy conservation organization to put some unwanted heat back on them *Cool

I realize Microsoft is likely already aware of the problem but hasn't bothered to fix it. If that is the case, my hope is at least this info will help those understand the extra cost associated with this problem and how to monitor and partially avoid it.

Yes, I'm having such issues since the last Creators Update... Both WinStore.App.exe and

...yes, and SystemSettings.exe opens and behave like TSR process.

    I posted my case here:
    WinStore.App.exe in process list - - Windows 10 Forums

...but I've not managed to solve the issue.

Everything went fine before Creators Update. I didn't know this issue has existed for a long time... And still exists.

I hope MS will fix this soon.
