Windows 10: Window search for app shows missing icon for app instead of the app's icon

I wrote a windows app and wrapped it with msix. I sideloaded the app. The app shows the correct icon in the start menu, pin it to start menu for icon sizes small, medium, wide, and large, or pin it to the taskbar. The icon in the applications title also displays correctly. The only place where the correct icon does not show up is when I try to search for the app. The icon displayed when the app is search for is the default missing icon a box with an X in it and the background color of red.


I cleared the local IconCache by deleting %localappdata%/IconCache.db and %localappdata%/Microsoft/Windows/Explorer/IconCache* . That had no effect. I also checked the Save taskbar thumbnails previews in the Performace Options in the Advance tab of Systems Properties and that had no effect.


What I suspect is that the icon used when searching for a app comes from a different cache i.e. not from %localappdata%, or it requires an icon size that I've not included in my app. I however don't find anything explaining that.


One more piece of information. On my first couple of version when I was developing the app, I didn't supply the msix with all the icons I needed. The msix now has the icon files png files, so that it displays correctly in all situations except for when the app is search for. As I was working with a newer version, I would first uninstall the app and then install the new version as opposed to doing an app update. Let me also clarify, here's the list of png files in the msix module:

The application module that the msix wraps has one icon file that contains 3 icon sizes: 16x16, 32x32, and 48x48. Do I need to add some more sizes to the icon file for the search for app to display the icon correctly? This stuff is not well documented or hard to find as to what the requirements are for things to work correctly in all scenarios.


I've not found any community posts solutions that work. I have seen posts with similar symptoms, except they are referencing app that they have installed such as Weather rather than an app that they have developed.

No outlook.com app shortcut icon in chrome

Uninstalling chrome make's the chrome Outlook.com app https://chrome.google.com/webstore/search/hotmail checker i use, disappear from chrome as a shortcut next to the star button for bookmarks and the settings button where i have adblock and google chromecast icon

How do i get it back, i use windows 8.1 64 bit, extremly annoying that i can't get this icon,button back in chrome, please help me *Smile

 

Cortana search does not show icons for metro apps

Hi there, I have a similar imperfection which showed up upgrading to creators pack 2. When I search for Window store apps, (i.e. Mail, Calculator, Feedback, Edge) with Cortana, I always get blank icons. The app icons appear if I dock them to start or to task bar and they all work. It's only the icon that is missing when I search.

I have tried rebuilding search index, reinstalling whatever apps I can actually reinstall (like mail) and what was suggested above, but it does not fix it. Any ideas?

I have reported it to Microsoft via feedback app, but wondering if anyone else has been able to manually fix it.

• When you hover your mouse over your taskbar or Start menu, are you seeing the icons for your apps?
• Have you tried searching for a specific app and check if it will appear on the search results?
