Windows 10: Windows 10: 1 disk at 100% activity... Though nothing's running on disk.

This has happened to be since maybe 2 days ago: at first I disregarded it as some updates or whatnot but since it has persisted and I've no clue why it's like this:

I should also mention the disk in question at point of recording was idle, no programs or any sort was running. In turn, some Windows 10 processes due to this error has been quite slow, for example moving files, deleting files, getting into file explorer folders where often it will go into a not responsive state before responding.

Some actions I've already taken myself to rectify the problem are a start-up disc scan, which failed so I decided to reinstall Windows entirely keeping my files, and the problem still persists.


Does anyone have any idea what issue I'm facing and hopefully and idea how to make it better? Thanks.

In the Task Manager, under Performance tab, the disk utilization reaches to 100% due to which system became lagging and unresponsive. It started freezing in few moments and this keeps happening until disk usage reduces from 100%.

Control panel > Power Options > Edit Plan Settings > Change Advanced Power Settings > Processor Power Management > Maximum Processor state.

Also, once I start Chrome 64, it uses lots of cpu and ram to do absolutely nothing.

This is caused by a common combination of Skype as well Google Chrome. Similar issue with other programs could also cause 100% disk usage. To fix this do the following

Windows 10 100% Disk activity

Hi -
I recently upgraded my OS from 8.1 to 10 on my new laptop.

The problem is now my disk activity is 100% for at least 15-20 mins after start up. Even the start up time is 4 mins.

I have tried increasing the virtual memory, and the suggestions in the thread (Fixing 100% disk usage in Windows 10 with Chrome and Skype running) but didn't work.

I am not running any programs, and the highest disk activity is due to Service Host



I am using a Dell i7347-10051sLV laptop with 8GB RAM

Disk Usage at 100% with nothing running

My PC is running Windows 10 with the latest updates but has suddenly become unusable with disk usage staying at 100% even with nothing running and just the same processes listed in Task Manager as before the problems
started. I've tried a few suggestions found in online forums - disabling Windows Search and Superfetch, adjusting page file size, etc. but nothing has done the trick yet. I don't have any outside anti-virus software installed. I read about the potential MSI
issue but don't have IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers listed in the Device Manager. Finally, it seems to boot up normally and will have periods where the disk usage drops and it's usable but those moments are brief and it inevitably goes back up to 100% usage.
