  1. Windows 10 1089 Freezes, Mouse Still Moves

    Hi,

I have this issue where my PC will slowly freeze and the UI becomes completely unresponsive. It happens randomly and the computer will not aknowledge any form of keyboard input, including Ctrl+Alt+Del or even Ctrl+Win+Shift+B (for restarting the graphics driver). The only exception being the mouse, which still moves with no lag or hiccup.

As I cannot link the problem to any specific program or action (as it will also happen when PC is left unattended, or will get stuck even before login), this problem is very annoying, The only thing I noticed is that after it gets stuck and I restart, it doesen't happen again in the next session.

    :)

  2. Windows 10 1089 Freezes, Mouse Still Moves

    Hi,

I have this issue where my PC will slowly freeze and the UI becomes completely unresponsive. It happens randomly and the computer will not aknowledge any form of keyboard input, including Ctrl+Alt+Del or even Ctrl+Win+Shift+B (for restarting the graphics
driver). The only exception being the mouse, which still moves with no lag or hiccup.

As I cannot link the problem to any specific program or action (as it will also happen when PC is left unattended, or will get stuck even before login), this problem is very annoying, The only thing I noticed is that after it gets stuck and I restart, it
doesen't happen again in the next session.

I first installed Windows 10 1809 in October 2018 just as it was first launched. I noticed that both my third-party browsers became very slow, (Chrome and Firefox. Firefox being outright unusable.), I cannot precisely recall if the freezing problem was already
present or not, but I would guess it was. As I depend on this PC for work, I promptly rolled back the update (even before it was pulled out by Microsoft itself!)

Thus, returning to 1803 I had the nasty surprise of finding out that my PC would freeze randomly, as described above.

I tried the following in a attempt to solve the problem:

    1. Turn off PCIe Active State Power Management in Power Options
    2. Turn off Fast Startup in Power Options
    3. Repair Windows by means of a USB boot drive (It didn't accuse any problem)
    4. Reinstall both browsers and not use any extensions.
    5. Update driver for Graphics Card
    6. Update driver for SSD
    7. Update driver for Keyboard and Mouse
    8. Update driver for Chipset
    9. Tried to update Motherboard firmware (there wasn't a new one)
    10. Run CHKDSK
    11. (By then Windows 1809 was available again) Update to Windows 1809!!!
    12. Uninstall Chrome completely
After I uninstalled Chrome it doesn't happen as often anymore, but still does. Honestly, I have no idea what this could be or why would it persist after both rolling back to 1803 and updating again to 1809. I researched quite a lot and found some people
linking this issue to the Chipset driver or a reset loop bug with Windows and SSDs. I sincerely don't know.

I post this here in an effort to both inform people who happen to have this problem and to help in the diagnostic by anyone in Microsoft who happens to be responsible for solving this.

    Hi Maximo,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

    1. Are you running multiple security software on your computer?
    2. What is the make and model of the computer?
I really appreciate your efforts to fix the issue. I understand how something like this will test your patience. Here are the few steps you can try to fix the issue.

    Method 1

Unplug all the external devices and try to boot the computer to desktop.

    Method 2

Start your PC in safe mode

You may refer the article on how to start your PC in
    safe mode in Windows 10
    .

If the device is working fine in safe mode, try to check in clean boot.

Note: A ‘clean boot’ starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs, so that you can determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program.

Your computer may temporarily lose some functionality while in a clean boot environment, however, that functionality will return when you reset the computer to start normally after you have finished your troubleshooting.

You may refer the article on how
to perform a clean boot in Windows
    .

Refer the section How to determine what is causing the problem after you do a clean boot, if your device is working fine in clean boot.

Also refer the section Reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting.

    Method 3

I suggest you to refer the article Advanced troubleshooting for Windows-based computer
    freeze issues
    .

Note: The registry is a database in Windows that contains important information about system hardware, installed programs and settings, and profiles of each of the user accounts
on the computer. Windows often reads and updates the information in the registry.

Normally, software programs make registry changes automatically. You should not make unnecessary changes to the registry. Changing registry files incorrectly can cause Windows to stop working or make Windows report the wrong
    information.

Please take a backup of the registry. Follow the steps given in the link below:

    Link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/322756/how-to-back-up-and-restore-the-registry-in-windows

    Hope it helps.

Windows 10 Freezes But Mouse Still Moves

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I understand your concern regarding the issue that you are facing.

From what you have mentioned, I would suggest you to try these steps to see if it resolves the issue

    Method 1: Troubleshoot

Windows 10 has a built-in troubleshooter to check and fix issues with hardware and devices. I would suggest you to run this troubleshooter to check if the issue is with your mouse. Refer these steps:

    • Press Windows key +X, select Control panel
    • Change the view by option on the top right to Large icons
    • Click on troubleshooting and click on the view all option on the left panel
    • Run the Hardware and devices troubleshooter

    Method 2.

Try updating the latest Mice and other pointing devices from the manufacturer's website and check if the issue persists.

Follow the steps to update the audio drivers:

    a. Press Windows key + X key and click Device Manager.

    b. Expand the Mice and other pointing devices.

    c. Right-click on the HID compliant mouse and click on Update driver software.

    d. Restart the computer and check.

Hope this helps. If the issue remains unresolved, please get back to us and we would be happy to help
