Windows 10: Windows 10 1803 - There is no power option available - after trying to update from Windows...

Hi All,

I tried to update on domain joined computer with Datto RMM Windows 10 Upgrade Component basically it updates the Windows 10 Pro build version from 1803 to 1909. But apparently after the reboot it still has the same version 1803 and now I noticed that the power option are not available.

Steps done:

Type sfc /scannow no error, Type powercfg –restoredefaultschemes then Type DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth > no go

Also I went thru Local Policy > User Rights Assignment > Shut down the system > noticed that local admin was not available and only domain admins and the "add user" button is grayed out. But other objects in User Rights Assignment I can add users.

Tried to restart via CMD got an error, access denied. Test to login with domain admin > no go still no available power option

Next Major Windows 10 Update Named "Spring Creators Update"

The next Windows 10 service pack major update has been named "Spring Creators Update." Windows Insider Program users toying with Build 17618 of the operating system spotted a listing of all the major updates of Windows 10 known to the build, when running "Get-VMHostSupportedVersion" in Power Shell. The last entry reads "Microsoft Windows 10 Spring Creators Update 1803." The version number (1803 in this case), often coincides with the public release date of the update. The Fall Creators Update 1709, released in 2017-09 (September) to Insiders. Going by that convenion, Spring Creators Update could see a "branded" Insider preview build this month, 2018-03 (March), with a public release usually 3-4 weeks after, presumably before Summer kicks in.

No power options available after Windows update

Method 1.

Run SFC /Scannow to Fix Power Options Missing Issue on Windows 10 Creators Update

The power option missing or not working error in Windows 10 Creators
Update could also be caused by corrupt or missing system files. To
rule out that possibility, you could run the SFC command (System File
Checker) to repair the problematic system files and retrieve the power
options. Below is how:

Press Win + X to select Command Prompt (Admin).

Type sfc /scannow and then hit Enter. (Make sure to put a space between “sfc” and the slash.)

Type powercfg –restoredefaultschemes after the sfc /scannow command completes and then hit Enter.

Type DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and hit Enter.

Reboot your computer after the process finishes and then try the Sleep, Shut down, or restart option in the power menu to check whether
the power options are available now.

Method 2.

Tweak Group Policy Editor to Resolve Windows 10 No Power Options Available after Creators Update

If running the SFC commands fails to fix the futile power options in
Windows 10, try the Group Policy Editor tweak as below tutorials.
Before the registry tweak, you’d better backup your registry first in
case of any further system issues like blue screen, black screen with
cursor, Windows Hello not working etc.

Go to Search, type gpedit.msc to open Group Policy Editor.

Navigate to the following path:

User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Start Menu and Taskbar

Double-click on "Remove and Prevent Access to the Shut Down command".

Select “Not Configured” or “Disabled” and then click Apply.

Close the Group Policy Editor and then try the power options menu to see if the sleep/hibernate/restart option functions now.

Pro Tip：

If you are a Windows 10 Home user, the Group Policy Editor is not
available. But you can run regedit to open the Registry Editor and
then follow the below path to find the missing power options back:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Ensure that a value named NoClose exists with a value of 0.

Reboot your computer and check whether the Power Options missing bug
gets fixed.

Method 3.

Add User Rights in the Local Security Settings to Get the Missing Power Options Back

Add User Rights in the Local Security Policy is also said helpfully to
repair the power options malfunction:

Press Win + R keys and type: secpol.msc and then hit Enter to open the Local Security Policy.

Go to: Security Settings –> Local Policies –> User Rights Assignment –> Shut down the system.

Choose Properties and then Add Users or Group to add your user id or group.

Sign out and Restart your computer.

Sign in and then you should find the Restart & Shutdown options are available.
