Windows 10: Windows 10 1809 and 1903 install but login and desktop issues

With both the 1809 (any version of them) and 1903 feature updates after installing I am unable either unable to login to my PC, I can get to the login prompt and enter my credentials but it rarely makes it past the next screen. If it does make it past that screen it is a black screen. All I can do from there is a CTRL-ALT-DEL and restart or shutdown. None of the other options result in anything.


The only way I can get into the system is to reboot into recovery mode and uninstall the feature update. Booting into safe mode doesn't even work.


I've tried installing both from Windows Update and manually by downloading the updater tool with no difference in the result. I'd rather not do a clean install of Windows if I can avoid it. The majority of the software I have is not installed via the the Microsoft App store and will be a major pain to reinstall it all.


The system is a home built desktop PC with an AMD processor. So no manufacture support. I don't recall the model number of the processor or motherboard but it is a 3.2Ghz AMD processor on an ASUS motherboard.


Any suggestions on what I can try to get past this login/desktop issue?

It's basically what I mentioned above, small issues here and there ,but nothing to end your day.. for the most part.

I know it's anecdotal, but for my experience 95% of the time it's perfectly fine. The issues I've run into wouldn't be enough for me to roll back , but they would be enough (had I not installed it yet) ,to avoid it for another couple weeks which is why I'm suggesting it to the OP

Micro freezes and lockups with install of 1809 or 1903.

This started with the 1809 release and got worse in the 1903 release. Before these releases, all worked fine without the freezing and lockups. It starts right from the booting of the laptop. The spinning dot circle has many micro freezes that extend the
boot time to 2-5 minutes! If you get to the desktop, you WILL get a hard lockup in less that a minute. I have tried updating the video driver, but that didn't help. BTW, the cursor is freezing.

Yes, I have tried clean installs of both 1809 and 1903. When booting 1809 and 1903 from my USB Jump drive the freezing dot circle begins as the boot in occurring. As stated, this started on 1809 and got worse in 1903. I think the chip-set
has an issue with some sort of change in Windows.

Both attempts to clean install 1809 and 1903 the issue is there. I am resolved to clean install 1803.
With 1803 there are no freezing or lockups. Again this problem started with 1809.
I know is it something that starts very early in the booting process. The spinning dot wheel appears and is already freezing for a couple of seconds. If this is not addressed I will have to stay on 1803 on this laptop forever.

So, does anyone know what the he!! is going on? This laptop is a great 2in1 and is working beautifully on 1803.

No, 1809 is not a pre-requisite for 1903

Thank you. I'll just wait for May update. I had to force 1809 on my desktop, but found after all the trouble the update was no big deal and not worth the effort.
