    Windows 10 1903 Breaks Network File/Folder Sharing

I am extremely frustrated again. I went through the hades of MS removing Homegroups back in 5/2018, and it was only through Pauli O's heroic instructions that I was able to get things properly shared again. Various MS updates have subsequently broken sharing, but I've been able to muddle through to fix things again & again & again. Until build 1903.

The short story is that user files/folders shared from Windows 10 machines that have received build 1903 are now giving "permission" errors on all computers while user files/folders shared on machines running build 1809 are still accessible to all PCs.

To clarify, in File Explorer, Network, all the PCs & their shared resources correctly show up in builds 1809 and 1903. However, attempting to access the shared files/folders on ALL of the build 1903 PCs results in the "you don't have permission to access" error. What?!?

To troubleshoot, I've disconnected all but three PCs from the network. I went through Pauli O's steps (link above) again on the build 1903 PCs to be sure nothing had somehow gotten changed - all settings remain as they should be including the hosts file on each PC. In the process, though, I found that I could access all the shared files/folders on the build 1903 machines without the "permission" error by typing in the IP addresses rather than clicking on the share in File Explorer, Network. What on earth has happened with build 1903 and how do I fix it so that clicking on shared files/folders in File Explorer, Network works?

As a temporary work-around, I have pinned the build 1903 IP addresses to Quick Access on each of the two Windows 10 build 1903 PCs (one Pro, one Home), but that isn't manageable for all 25 Windows 10 computers - there is no way folks will be able to keep those numbers straight to be able to find what they need.

Until I can get some help sorting this out, I'm leaving the other 22 Windows computers disconnected from the LAN. Tomorrow morning is going to be ugly.

Interestingly - or not - one of the 1903 Windows 10 Home PCs has the entire hard drive shared (don't ask). The entire drive is still fully accessible to all Windows 10 PCs except for c:\Users\John (that's the only user account on that computer). SMH.

    TIA

    :)

?? How do I PW protect Folders in windows

    hmmm?
Sharing files and folders overview You can share the files and folders stored on your computer, on a network, and on the Web. The method you choose depends on whom you want to share files with, and what computer they will use to access the files.

When you share files or folders, they are not as protected as they are when you do not share them. People with access to your computer or your network might be able to read, copy, or change files that are in a shared folder. You should always be aware that the files and folders that you share are available to other people and be sure to monitor your shared files and folders on a regular basis.

    Important

If your computer is not joined to a domain, you can use the Network Setup Wizard to automatically turn file and printer sharing on or off. To start the Network Setup Wizard, click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections, and then click Network Setup Wizard.
If you both use the same computer

You can put the files you want to share in the Shared Documents folder. Files stored in the Shared Documents folder or its subfolders are always available to other users on your computer.

    Step-by-step procedure
    Note

If you are connected to a network domain, the Shared Documents, Shared Pictures, and Shared Music folders are not available.
If both computers are on the same network

You can share a folder or drive on your computer with others on the network. You can also control whether the files in the shared folder can be modified by other users.

If your computer is connected to a network domain, use this procedure:

    Step-by-step procedure
If your computer is connected to a workgroup, use this procedure:

    Step-by-step procedure
    Note

If you are connected to a network domain, you will need to set the Access control for the folder or drive after sharing it. For more information, go to To set, view, change, or remove file and folder permissions.
If you want to share your files online

You can publish pictures and documents on the Web using the Web Publishing Wizard. The files will be stored in a private, online folder that you manage.

    Step-by-step procedure

If you don't want others to access your files

You can prevent other users from accessing your folders and the files they contain. When your computer is connected to a domain, this is called setting permissions for your file or folder. When your computer is connected to a workgroup, this is called making your folders private.

If your computer is connected to a network domain, use this procedure:

    Step-by-step procedure
If your computer is connected to a workgroup, use this procedure:

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

    Windows 10 1903 Breaks Network File/Folder Sharing

Share Files and Folders Over a Network in Windows 10

Hi Brink great tutorial as usual.

I could not help but notice in step 1 you say to enable " Function Discovery Resource Publication "

In most of the posts I have read on Ten Forums they also suggest to enable " Function Discovery Provider Host "

Are you suggesting that Function Discovery Provider Host is not necessary.
