Windows 10: Windows 10 1903 Update Forced my Pro Edition into Enterprise Edition (Here is how I fixed it)

I performed the 1903 update the other night and everything seemed to be working amazingly. I had come from an activated pro edition of windows and I expected everything to just work after the update in regards to the activation. About 24 hours into using the update I got a warning that I wasn't on an activated version of windows. Sure enough I see the settings app stated that I was using an unofficial version of Windows 10 Enterprise edition. This was confusing because I have never owned enterprise edition, nor have I ever had the interest to use it.

I also purchased this computer about two years ago and so anything such as the box was gone, and I also know I purchased the product key from the windows store to upgrade to windows pro. I tried using the troubleshooter, searching the web, and talking to the assistant bot on the help pages. Nothing was working, until it hit me, I cannot fix this because my key is from Windows 10 Pro not enterprise. I did some searching and found this key (VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T) that is a base product key for windows 10 pro that when I selected change product key downgraded my os to pro edition. Afterwards everything must have started working as it should because my store bought key kicked back in and now everything is working as it should.


This was a scary moment when I just wanted to do an update but I lost my pro edition activation, which aren't cheap. Thankfully everything seems to be working now and I hope this helps someone.

How to receive updates on Windows 10 Enterprise edition?

As you are trying to install updates on Windows 10 Enterprise edition, suggest you to post the question in the TechNet Forum.

The Enterprise edition is a different edition altogether compared to Pro edition and you do not have the downgrade option available.

You can follow the steps provided below to be able to downgrade to Windows 7:

• Open Settings.
• Select Update & security.
• Click Recovery tab.
