Windows 10 20H2 could launch soon: All you need to know

Microsoft has already published Windows 10 version 20H2 update for enterprise customers for testing ahead of its anticipated arrival in late 2020. We’re expecting the update to begin rolling out to customers next month or November, and here’s everything you need to know.

Windows 10 version 20H2 update, unofficially known as version 2009, is being touted as a service pack-style update to devices already running Windows 10 version 2004 (May 2020 Update).

I believe Microsoft’s current plan is to push May 2020 Update (version 2004) to more users before widely rolling out version 20H2. This makes sense since version 20H2 will activate dormant features within Windows 10 version 2004, including the new Start Menu and multitasking improvements.

Microsoft has already started testing Windows 10 KB4562830 ‘enablement package’ update.

KB4562830 will upgrade Windows 10 version 2004 to a slightly newer build number (19042) and activate dormant features that have already been delivered to version 2004 via August Patch Tuesday update.

    Before and after 20H2 update

Like last year’s November 2019 Update, Windows 10’s new upgrade enablement technology will ensure that your apps will work with the new build, and it will also mean less headache for everyone, especially businesses and system admins while upgrading their PCs in the organization.

If you’re a Windows Insider, the first and fairly stable builds of 20H2 are available for download on the company’s Beta channel. To get the feature update now, you’ll need to join the Insider program, go to the Beta Channel and seek the 20H2 builds from Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.

It’s also worth noting that “20H2” designation will be used instead of a versioning number this time.

It’s not yet clear why Microsoft made this change, but for consumers, Microsoft says it will continue to use a “friendly name” like the “November 2020 Update” if the update is released in November.

Next month, Microsoft is also expected to announce the new Surface Laptop ‘Sparti’ in a virtual launch event and more details on the rollout of 20H2 update could be shared during or after the event.

As we noted last month, Windows 10 20H2 comes with a new Start Menu, Edge integration in Alt-Tab, Chromium Edge pre-installed, and general improvements.

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

    Windows 10 Tweaks

As you may already know, Windows 10 (as well as Windows 8) allow you to log in with a valid Microsoft account, instead of creating a local account that only works on your machine. However, you may prefer to keep a local account for privacy reasons. If you do, though, some Windows 10 features—like Cortana—may not work. Despite the default behavior, the Windows 10 Store is not one of them. You can still log in to your Microsoft account for just the Store without switching to a full Microsoft account. The process, however, is not terribly obvious. To do so, follow these steps:

    • Launch the Store from your Start menu.
    • Click the user icon next to the search box.
    • Click “Sign-in” from the menu that appears.
    • Choose “Microsoft account” and log in like normal.
    • When the “Make it yours” box appears do not enter your password. Instead, click “Sign in to just this app instead.”
