Windows 10 Activation, New motherboard and CPU

    Hello,

I just upgraded my computer with a new motherboard and CPU. I installed a clean copy of windows 10 pro from a USB and skipped inputting a product key/activation code because I do not have one. Before the change, I linked my copy of windows 10 pro to this microsoft account. The copy of windows 10 was not an OEM copy. I originally bought a windows 7 license when I built my previous computer and had upgraded to windows 10 since.

I have tried the activation troubleshooter in settings -> Activation -> Troubleshoot and after clicking "I changed my hardware on this device recently" in the window that pops-up I selected the checkbox of my previous machine and clicked the activate button. It gives the message "We can’t reactivate Windows on this device. Try again later. ".

    Thanks,

    Zach Bidwell

    :)

    10?

    New Motherboard, Windows 10 activation

    Hi Austin,

Thank you for posting the query on Microsoft Community.

Before changing the Motherboard, was Windows 10 activated?

You just need to activate Windows 10. Refer the link below.

    Why can't I activate Windows 10?:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/why-activate-windows-10

The only hardware changes that can negatively impact activation status once you upgrade to free version are the changes to the:

    • CPU

    • TPM

    • Motherboard replacement
The following changes are examples of hardware changes that will NOT impact the activation status:

    • HDD/SSD

    • Video card

    • Adding extra memory
If you replace the CPU, TPM, or Motherboard you may have to re-activate but this will not require a purchase of Windows 10.

Can I clean re-install Windows 10 after upgrading?
