Windows 10: Windows 10 activation problem after a format

Hello,


I own a Lenovo Legion Y520 and a while back I decided to use it as a work laptop at the office. That long story short meant it had to be formatted and an enterprise version of Windows 10 was installed to it. A month ago, I stopped working for the company I was using it as a work laptop for and due to security policy, I got it back with another format and with a non-activated version of Windows 10 Enterprise. I've read online that after a format in case the same version of windows is installed that came pre-installed to a laptop, in my case Windows 10 Home, logging in to the Microsoft account that was originally used, will take care of the activation.


My problem at the moment is that the version installed is not the same as the one that came with the laptop and consequently logging in to my account does not help with the activation. My first thought was to download some trial version of Windows 10 Home and do a re-installation but I cannot find such a version available online.



Any ideas how I could get the laptop up and running again with Windows activated?

Windows 10 formatting ?

We upgraded windows 7 to 10. Many crashes and errors after that. So a format and clean install of windows 10. Activated automatically. Zero issues and no more crashes etc etc.
So I'm inclined to say to just go for it. And if a problem, then use your windows 7 key.

But he already went to 10, so it's already tied to his hardware no?

To that end, he would only need to create the install media from the MS website, format upon installation and activate. There shouldn't be a need to to 10 since he is currently there and activated. See post 3...


Or.. did I miss something? If he's on 7, can you still get 10 free if you didn't activate it before that expired?

Edit: You have to use the assisted technology to get it free now... a bit shady to me if you aren't using that tech. That way you'd have to upgrade to 10.. then format and reinstall for a clean install.

Run CMD


1. diskpart
2. list disk

Then in the 3º step, put the correct number of disk in the list for the usb flash (if it's listed in disk 3, then you'll have to write select disk 3).

2. select disk #
3. clean
4. create partition primary
5. select partition 1
6. active
7. format fs=fat32
8. assign
9. exit

with that commands you will format the flash drive in fat32, if you have a large drive you can select also "format fs=ntfs" in step 7.
