Windows 10: Windows 10 Activation Problems

A friend of mine recently built me a computer, and installed Windows 10 Education during setup in the hopes I might be able to get a product key from my university technology hub.


After learning I wasn't eligible for this, I purchased and attempted to install Windows 10 Home edition, purchasing a key directly from Microsoft to do so, thinking that it would detect that I was trying to install and license a different version of the OS and make the necessary corrections.


When installing, I noticed that the dialogue box wouldn't let me change the install from Education to Home manually, but I allowed the installer to go about its business - now my activation screen is telling me I have to activate, isn't accepting my product key, is telling me I STILL have Education installed and is offering up the following error codes:

• On the Activation page of the settings menu, in some angry red error text: 0x803f7001
  
• On the Change Product Key dialogue box, after attempting to enter my key: 0xc004f050

I understand that the higher error code is to denote an error regarding the activation of Windows 10 in general, and if I recall correctly the lower code is to denote an install / key mismatch.


The activation screen is prompting my to now purchase a legitimate copy of Windows 10, which I did so when making my purchase of Windows 10 Home, so I rang the Australian support line as I really thought this was the right way to make these corrections, and can't afford to purchase the OS again, however after about 20 minutes of chatting to one person and then being transferred to someone else who then said I would be further transferred to a technician, the line disconnected. Having attempted to use the case number I was provided in my initial call 1499997178 for any Microsoft / Windows support staff who might see this through the call back service only to have my line go dead again this time with a side helping of garbled robot noises for a solid minute prior to disconnect, I have detailed everything here save for the product key itself in the hopes that I might receive some more reliable, less garbly, text based assistance instead.

Really hoping to get this sorted soon, as I would like to start working on my machine soon, and would love for all my programs and my operating system to be verifiably legitimate. Cheers in advance for any help - this is my first time working with a machine from initial Windows setup, so really hoping to learn how to get this right.

Windows 10 Activation (Insider)

How long did you wait for activation?
When I re-installed with a fresh install... it took a few hours to sync and activate.
However, it did, finally, activate.

I won't buy a key, stupid.

I'll revert back to windows 7 then.

When I still was on windows 7, about a year ago I added 4GB extra ram which is a total of 8GB now,
is that causing the problem?

 

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK
