Windows 10: windows 10 activation

Hi, I upgraded my windows 7 ultimate using media creator of my the same pc. Bought a new SSD HD and replaced my old HD with a bigger one. I successfully installed windows 10 pro from the media flash drive but I keep getting message that my new windows 10 is not activated. When I go to settings and try to type in my windows 7 ultimate product key (starts with 00) I can't type the numbers. How do I upgrade this machine to windows 10 since I already have a valid windows 7 ultimate key. I am thinking I can take a route of upgrade but don't want to do that before I confirm it will work as I thought the media creator will pick up my key from my original install. But that didn't happen. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Here is the steps summary

1- I created a windows 10 media onto a flash drive from the windows 7 ultimate

2- I upgraded my existing hard drive and added a new SSD HD as my boot drive

3- I installed windows 10 from flash drive from step 1 above onto new SSD

4- install worked but my new windows install is not active and I can't put in the windows 7 ultimate key

finally , would an upgrade on the existing windows 7 ultimate activate my windows 10 new install?

I won't buy a key, stupid.

I'll revert back to windows 7 then.

When I still was on windows 7, about a year ago I added 4GB extra ram which is a total of 8GB now,
is that causing the problem?
