Windows 10 after one month: Hits and misses

If you asked me, the miss that I have is that I couldn't do a clean install AFTER I had successfully activated my upgrade. The clean install wouldn't activate and when I contacted MS, all I got..." sorry but you will after to start over and reinstall Windows 8.1 again."

That was such a WRONG answer.

I went through the exact same thing , updated successfully and my PC was permanently activated . Did a clean install and refused to activate , had to go through the whole upgrade thing again with another clean install , what a major pita.

  3. Win 10 after 30 days. Start checking your reliability monitor for real time operating system stability read out. Mine shows no critical events until the MS August 29th, 2015 update. At that time I went from a score of 10(very reliable) to a 2(very unreliable) and of course it is trending back up. The time to reach a high reliability number is much shorter than in previous versions of Windows OSs. Unless your system is experiencing severe operating characteristics, don't read to much into this diagnostic tool.

Win 10 pro 64 bit should be free of all the tracking and goofy assitant this and that but, be able to add that functionality in if the operator wants it. The pro version is at it states should a professional version for professional applications on a very light initial install. IMO. MS are you reading this?

My experience with win 10 is not a happy one even though I have used the pre-release.
I built a new ASUS BASED computer for win 10 release. Loaded the pre-release & used it.
A big problem occurred! when I booted, after about 2 minutes, the computer just went off-line.
Nothing on the screen, HD light just kept blinking!

I held the "Start Button" down until it shut down, rebooted & everything was OK.
I thought it was the fault of my computer build. Tore it down checked very part of the assembly & reassembled.
    Still occurred. Just ignored it!

When the final release came, I downloaded it to my Win 8.1 work desktop! Guess WHAT!
It did the same thing. Went into a loop! Shut it down re-booted everything was OK until. I could reboot at will, no problem.
If I waited a few hours, the same event occurred!

The net bad thing that happened is that I lost ALL MY FAVORITES.
Can not find a way in MAIL to import or export Favourites.
Can't find a way in Mail the make fonts default to Bold & size 14!

I am 86, bad eyesight, like many of my computer friends that are my age!

I brought this up in the preview edition but it was Ignored!

I haven't been on the forum for quite awhile as I was put down too meant times by idioms!
    They are everywhere!

    Windows 10 Hits/Misses

    Hits:
    1. The updated start menu.. It just meets my needs and is flexible for what I do.
    2. Edge, Yes,, it's still under development but I like it so far and the direction it's heading. In time it should be great, IMO,.
    3. The Quick Access.. For me it makes it easy to access the files/folders I use the most.
    4. Cortana. I use it from time to time and so far I like it.. is it perfect.. no.. but it's fun to use.
5 Upgrading Media Player to handle FLAC.

    Misses:
    1. Not fond of new Photo App.. I still like and use the older one from 8.1.

    That's it for now..

I upgraded from 8.1 pro and it is better than 8.1 no doubt about it but I still installed classic shell as I detest those tile apps on a desktop, I know you can unpin them but they shouldn't be there in the first place, it's a fast O/S alright and it will get better over time but I will still use Linux as my main O/S as it's just so much better.

Windows 10 after one month: Hits and misses

Jeff: tks and I have also been happy so far with what I have done and seen. I have so much to learn, try and do with windows 10.
I have not messed with doing a menu yet, but I like what the Edge browser has shown me, and will keep checking it out as I am using it. So far the new Win10 has made it easy enough for me to find and use programs/folders/files... I have not tried Cortana yet, but maybe soon. I am using the Media Player now, but listening for suggestions, What is FLAC? I do take a lot of big sized .jpg photos.
I have not had much time for the past two-three years to get much into the bowels of Win-systems, and I believe that win 10 will be allowing me to do some of that again - and have some fun while doing it. I am finally retiring on Halloween, and will be doing more win10. What new photo app are you talking about?
thanks, and be safe.. Cliff M.

    1. FLAC is a music file format.. in 8.1 Media player didn't support it but now it does.. is it a big deal no.. but it's nice.

    2. The new APP for viewing photos is the default now.. it replace Windows Photo Viewer,, but you can still get Photo Viewer with a reg hack.

I don't get FLAC. The files are too big and don't really sound any better to me. I'll stick with my 192 mp3's or 96 wma's. They both sound great. A wma at 128 really sounds good. Photo Viewer, or the Photo app, I have no use for. They both stink. I use Irfanview instead.

  12. 3 upgrades and 1 clean install , all good, no complaints. Once I locked them down, there good to go, funny thing, now this is the first time since windows 95 I actually have a MS activated version of windows at home or at work. Everything(software wise) migrated fine and works. Actually even faster than Win 7 Pro.

  13. Windows 10 after one month: Hits and misses

FLAC to MP3 and WMA is UHD or HD picture to SD picture. If you cannot tell the difference fair enough but if you have a good sound card, amplifier and speakers FLAC files being lossless compressed WAVE files sound superb. As good as the CD source they are ripped from. Lossy Mp3 and WMA files sound good on better equipment but some of the detail is lost hence the smaller file size. If you want quality go with FLAC, there is no reason not to with HD storage prices being low.
